AVI capture files
The avi file created when I capture a video is not compatible with either that used by Pinnacle's Studio or by MS's Movie Maker. Does anyone know what the problem is?
Jerry,
You need to tell us exactly what versions of software you're using.
AVI is a container format. It doesn't specify any particular encoding method. Before it starts recording, Celestia should display a popup menu titled "Video Compression" where you can pick any of the codecs that are installed on your system. You need to pick one that's compatible with your editing software.
If you have enough disk space, it's usually best to pick one of the lossless formats (e.g. "full frame uncompressed") for all of your intermediate work, and then choose a lossy format (like MPEG 1) only for the final movie.
However, in principle, Movie Maker should be able to use any of those same codecs that are available to Celestia, unless you happened to pick one for which you have an encoder but no decoder.
I just now tested the "full frame uncompressed" format and had no problems importing (*) it into both Windows MovieMaker v5.1 and Windows Media Player v10. (I don't have Pinnacle Studio.)
System:
256MB 500MHz P3; Win XP Pro, SP2
128MB FX5700 LE, ForceWare v61.77
Celestia v1.3.2 final & latest CVS build

(*) -- I used File menu, "Import into Collections" to open it.
