Hi,

I am using SUSE linux 9.0 prefessional with an ATI 9000 graphics card. I have installed the latest ATI drivers for the card.

I have compiled celestia using the KDE configuration. When I type celestia at the command line, there is the following test:

nStars: 112524
Initializing ARB vertex programs . . .
Loading ARB vertex program: shaders/diffuse_arb.vp
Loading ARB vertex program: shaders/specular_arb.vp
Loading ARB vertex program: shaders/haze_arb.vp
Loading ARB vertex program: shaders/bumpdiffuse_arb.vp
Loading ARB vertex program: shaders/bumphaze_arb.vp
Loading ARB vertex program: shaders/shadowtex_arb.vp
Loading ARB vertex program: shaders/diffuse_texoff_arb.vp
Loading ARB vertex program: shaders/rings_arb.vp
Loading ARB vertex program: shaders/ringshadow_arb.vp
Loading ARB vertex program: shaders/night_arb.vp
Loading ARB vertex program: shaders/glossmap_arb.vp
All ARB vertex programs loaded successfully.
render path: 3
ERROR: Communication problem with celestia, it probably crashed.

What I see is the celestia window appear, but the window is incomplete and I can see the windows and desktop behind it.

Problem with ATI cards?

Hi,

I'm sorry, this mail will not help you, but I just sent it because I have the same problem. Same error messages, and same crash, when I try to run Celestia. The only differences are, I use Mandrake 9.2, and / or Mandrale 10.0 (but it doesn't change anything!), and my graphic card is an ATI Radeon 9200SE.
Celestia launch correctly when I disable the 3D ATI graphics driver (2D only), but it's so slow !!!
When I enable the 3D driver, all 3D and openGL programs works correctly, but Celestia does not...
I tried many value, in the config file (using the ATI fglrxconfig program), but I can't find any parameters working for Celestia...

I hope someone solve this problem...Please Help !!!!!!!!!

This seems to me as a problem with the ATI driver (being the latest one doesn't always mean the best one). Did you test with another OpenGL program like, for example, glxgears, tuxracer or armagetron?
