Unable to install

When I try to install Celestia 1.3.1 , I receive the error message:

The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:0dba IP:0119 OP:65 63 74 20 61 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

This is on Windows XP, using NVidia GeForce4 Ti4200 graphics card.

To clarify slightly:

NTVDM is the emulator that Windows uses to run ancient 16bit programs.
Apparently Windows is misidentifying Celestia's installation program as being a 16bit program. Since it really is a 32bit program, NTVDM is crashing. The misidentification suggests that the installation program was corrupted during the download and is confusing Windows.
