85 Pegasi distance out

Post #1by ajtribick » 29.01.2004, 21:18

At solstation.com the distance is given as 40.5 light years.

In Celestia, 1203.6 light years, which gives us a G3 dwarf star with a radius 23.9 times that of the sun.

BTW Where did you obtain the Hipparcos data, out of interest?

Hipparcos tags 85 Peg (parallax 80.63mas) as being a companion to Hip 162 (parallax 2.71mas). To avoid separating true binaries, Celestia makes sure they're both assigned the same parallax.
It's a problem - you can either split stars that really are binaries, or you have to choose a common parallax for both stars, in the knowledge that many pairings in Hipparcos aren't real.
