Another issue, is that obviously I'd like to explore the cosmos at max resolution and color depth, which for my screen are: 1024*768 @ 32bit

Well, Celestia only allows me to select

Window Mode => up to 1024*768 @ 16bit
or
FullScreen Mode => up to 800*600 @ 32bit

funny isn't it... ? what a deal...

I believe someone had mentioned a bug which resulted in the highest resolution to be removed. Did you try 1.3.1 final? Maybe it has been fixed.

It has been fixed in 1.3.1 - you should find you have one more option at the high-res end of the display menu.
