Strange Rage 128 driver problem

My computer uncermoniously formatted itself recently. Before it was formatted, my Rage 128 graphics card drivers were the latest available from the ATI website. Celestia slowed down considerably on ringed planets and there were graphical glitches in the rings, although it was fine on everything else.
Afterwards, when I had to reinstall the drivers, I just used the ones on the driver CD supplied with the card, which are pretty old and not the latest. I immediately noticed how fast Celestia was on ringed planets, completely smooth and nothing like before.
And then, a few days ago, I downloaded and installed the latest drivers, which were newer than the ones before the format. And now Celestia slows down again on ringed planets. And I get graphical glitches - the rings are visible through the planet, and there are strange flickering black marks on the rings (I can post a screenshot if you want). So basically, with the original drivers, Celestia runs with no problems. With newer drivers, it doesn't.

Which version of Celestia are you using? In version 1.2.4, I added a fix for the slow rendering of ringed planets on TNT and Rage128 cards.

Hi!

I have a Rage 128 Pro, with the latest XP drivers, and I have the same problems, in general it gets slow near all textured objects, specially with saturn, saturn is transparent to it's own rings, and the textures are like cuadriculated or rendered by only one side of the texture. all these with Celestia 1.2.4.

Yup, 1.2.4 final... guess we just had to find some new problem... :D
It might be Windows XP, because I only got the problem after installing it (although XP loaded some new drivers for my card, which are not the newest but newer than the ones I had installed). Anyone with some other operating system care to comment?
