New minor moons missing in pre9

Post #1by JackHiggins » 17.08.2003, 00:38

Minormoons.ssc is supposed to have all the named minor moons, and numberedmoons.ssc on the CVS tree has all the other ones.

[shameless plug]
Also you can get the numbered moons from my site if you want... (in an easy to read format too!)
[/shameless plug]

However, in 1.3.1 pre9, none of the recently announced named minor moons are included. I realise it's a pre-release version so not everything is perfect, but don't forget to have the new ones in 1.3.1 final!!

Gad, I wish I hadn't called that file numberedmoons.ssc :(
It was the first thing that occured to me so that it would load after the already-named minormoons.ssc. Maybe reallyminormoons.ssc would have been a better choice, then Jack would stop hassling me to shift newly-named moons from one file to the other .
Two things going on - one is that I'm concerned about the growing clutter if I move all the newly-named moons into minormoons.ssc, and the other is that minormoons.scc is going to to need a bit of editing soon if we introduce shape models for Janus, Epimetheus and Prometheus. So I'm economizing on effort and doing nothing until I know exactly what I'm doing.
But the new names will go in.

Just making sure everything's accurate!!

Ok I understand- just making sure that it hadn't been forgotten about!

If you're worried about clutter, heres an idea...
Most of the REALLY tiny minor moons are retrograde, and they're the ones that clutter up the screen. How about having a minormoons.ssc for all the standard irregular moons, and then a retrogrademoons.ssc for all the other pebbles? It'd still load after the minormoons.ssc!

I can't really see any problems there... All the minor moons that we know the shapes of are in minormoons.ssc already, and we'll probably never know what most of the retrograde moons look like up close...

Good idea?

I've now updated numberedmoons.ssc with the new satellite names, if anyone apart from Jack wants them.

Look, I know that now makes it a stupid filename, but the alternative is for minormoons.ssc to get very big and create screen clutter for people who don't want it. And we don't want to now change the name to a sensible one, because then people will end up with multiple definitions by installing the new file without removing the old one ...

Mea culpa.

So how many other people do like to view ALL the minor moons?

Actually no... I think i'll start a poll about it instead!

Since there are so many previously-undetected minor moons admirers out there, I'm going to start announcing updates to numberedmoons.ssc.
Latest, fully up-to-date version is now available on the CVS tree at
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/celestia/celestia/extras/numberedmoons.ssc. (You needn't download this if you already have an up-to-date version of Jack's moons add-on, but if you're using numberedmoons.ssc, simply overwrite it with this new file.)
