Eclipse shadows get doubled

At the first I would like to mention that eclipses rendering gives a serious impact on my graphics card. Even when I show up such high polygon satellites as Mir, system gets less slower. I have 128M of memory and 16M Riva TNT2.

Another a real *bug* is eclipses rendering:
at this particular moment: 2593-03-02 03:22:09 UTC
when you will take a look at Jupiter, you will notice two shadows of a same satellite on night and day sides of the planet, which move into one point. At about 03:22 they collide and disappear. If you will run time back, you will see how the shadows appear from nothing and start moving on the planet surface.

Ambient light

Post #3by Matt McIrvin » 10.04.2002, 23:35

You can only see the extra shadow if there is some ambient lighting. Since the ambient lighting is non-physical to begin with, I suppose it could be argued that there's technically no correct way for it to look.

On the other hand, in some cases ambient light could be seen as simulating backscatter from some other object. And if there's some easy way to get rid of the extra shadow-- say, by somehow applying ambient light after the eclipses have been computed-- that would be desirable.

hello again people ...

it'seem you're talking about the "twin shadow" problem i spoke of time ago ( with the apearance of eclipses shadows ;p)

its like to appear with any graphic cards if you set an ambient light...

maybe chris can tell us more about that...

Yes, this problem will occur with any graphics card when ambient light is enabled. I'll work on a fix for it once I solve the crashing bugs. Let me apologize again for not making much progress lately. I've been away from home for 10 days, and just started my new job at nVidia on Monday. I hope to find some time this weekend to fix the crashing bugs and release an official 1.2.4 version of Celestia.

I hope this doesn't mean that Celestia will only support nvidia cards? :D
