Hi there,

I have an old K6-III/450MHZ, running Windows XP, and a VIPER 770 video card. The VIPER is a NVIDIA RIVA TNT2. I have DIRECTX 8.1.

With the MICROSOFT drivers for the video card, Celestia works. But after insatlling the NVIDIA DETONATOR XP newest drivers (44.03) Celestia refuses to start. Any other program runs OK.


When Celestia fail to start I get a message from Windows in which it is said that the fault is related to nvoglnt.dll, the OpenGL stuff.

I tried to remove (rename) nvoglnt.dll and then Celestia reports error on celestia.exe.

In DXDIAG, also is reported that nv4_disp.dll it is not Digitally Signed for Microsoft XP. CHanging the DirectX to 9.0a does not solved the problems.

Changing the Video Drivers to an older one, like 28.32, does not solve the problem either. Only when I completely uninstall the NVIDIA drivers and keep the video drivers suplied by WIndows Celestia works.

Does any one have any clue or idea to go over this problem?

DirectX should be irrelevant: Celestia uses OpenGL.

The most recent Nvidia drivers (44.03) are only certified for the FX series of cards. They seem to work for some but not all non-FX cards. (e.g. they go into a cpu-bound loop on my system, which has a GF4 Ti4200)

I'd suggest trying the previous version, 43.45, from http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=winxp-2k_archive

Don't try to mix-and-match different libaries from different versions of the driver kits. That's a recipe for disaster.

Be sure to completely de-install the previous Nvidia driver kit using "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. Also be sure to delete all the files in C:\NVIDIA. Then reboot before you try to install a different set of drivers.

Also, you should consider installing the most recent motherboard BIOS if your motherboard supports BIOS upgrades. Apparently there are problems with some of the early VIA and SIS chipsets which may (or may not) be fixed by BIOS firmware updates.

Thanks for the tips. I will try them this week, and let you know about the results.

I have my Motherboard bios updated. Its an old board (ASUS P5A-B), and there are no more recent updates.
