Ziggy

from the "Sol:Apollo12stage3" in your URL, i'm assuming you've renamed my neocp j002e3 xyz, right?! :) This problem is actually a weird bug, but looks pretty cool sometimes...

It happens becuase you haven't put the j002e3 texture in the medres folder, and because it's missing, celestia renders the earth cloud texture on the model instead. If you only had the moon & j002e3 in the same FOV, the moon texture should appear there instead!

The textures for models are referred to inside the 3ds file (usually near the start if you open it up with notepad) so that's why you don't need to say a texture in the ssc file. (Apart from selden's billboard object). But don't try editing a 3ds file manually to change the texture- it won't work!

Jack,

In principle one can create 3DS models for use in the solar system which use the textures specified for them in a .SSC file. Unfortunately, I haven't quite puzzled out the right 3DS format for that.

My billboard object does require you to edit its 3DS file if you want to use it for different pictures. Celestia does not (yet) allow one to specify surface texture images in .DSC files. I use Emacs, but there are some "simple" binary file editors available, too. HexEdit is one, I think.

Dear Jack and Selden,
Thank you so much for bothering, I have noticed a snappy title helps, with the exception of my "star of bethlehem" post, which demonstrated how easily wars can start...Anyway, Thank you for the model which you correctly surmised that I re-named, I wasnt taking liberties, I just couldn't remember what joo was. I did have it in medres, in fact, my renamed file is the first on the list....Also, the Borg Cube has a texture specified in its ssc, is their technology ahead of ours....? I've still got a non functioning clock if you've any ideas.
thanks again, I hope one day to be able to post something useful, it must be tiresome all the people with only troubles..
regards ziggy 8O

Well, it's left the Earth-moon area now, and won't be back for another 40 years or so... (If you can wait that long!) Although I hear it's probably going to impact the moon then, or maybe 40 years after that again, and we all love impacts here don't we... :D

Um... you say "in fact, my renamed file is the first on the list" - you didn't rename the .bmp did you?!! That must be called j002e3.bmp because that's what the 3ds is pointing to internally!

Dunno about the borg cube (Don't go in for that assimilation stuff much myself... ) I suppose since it is a cube, the teture would wrap around pretty easily, it being a regular shape...

What's wrong with your clock?
