Dissapearing Earth

I have been using the new hires texture but I have noticed that earth8k.dds disappears when you are more than 500,000 km (approx) away. If I turn on the cloud maps I can see those from that distance but the main texture is invisible. If I switch back to using the original medres texture it works fine. None of the other objects (mars etc) exhibit this problem with the other .dds texture I installed for them. My vid card is a radeon 64ddr
