It's marking your currently selected object. Ctrl-K gets rid of it, since that key combo toggles markers on and off.
Like me, you probably picked it up from running someone else's cel url - I've learned so-o-o many key presses trying to get rid of other people's settings ... :(

That is a "Mark". The feature is turned off and on with Control-K. It also is a feature that is specified in a Cel:// URL. A Cel:// URL that was created for a view that had Marks enabled will turn them on when it is selected.

A red mark shows the location of the currently selected object. You can change the red Mark to a green Mark by selecting "Mark" in the right-mouse-button popup-menu. Green Marks stay on until you exit Celestia or turn them off in that menu.

Marks show you where objects are even when they're too far away or too dim to see or when you've turned off rendering for that type of object. They also show you where the center of a 3D object is. This is very useful when trying to orient objects precisely.

Added later:
In case you haven't guessed, I use Marks a lot.
(*groan* pun not originally intended -- although I use them too. For those not familiar with them, Marks-A-Lot is a brand of felt-tip marker pens.)

What you can do is create your own library of Cel:// URLs which put you at your favorite viewpoints with your favorite settings, including Mark off.

Thank you, all back to normal now

I really think that these cel script things, are great
But it should put all you settings back as you left them
after viewing them.

Paul,

A quibble: these are Cel:// URLs not Cel scripts. Scripts are quite different.

URLs immediately put Celestia at exactly the viewpoint that someone has recorded.

Scripts are used to give Celestia a list of places to go, things to look at, how fast to do it, and with messages on the screen if you want.
