locks up mandrake 9.1 system

I have an hp pavilion (celeron w/384 M ram) running mandrake 9.1 with an intel 82810E CGC (chipset graphics controller).

Celestia seems to be completely stopping my machine--I have to power off--on occasion. (I have mostly experienced this when trying to view the earth--coincidence?) I upgraded from 1.2.5 to 1.3.0 and still experience this problem.

Is it possible that my display system is causing this nastiness? Is there something I can do?

thanks in advance

Try using the low resolution textures (press 'r').

1) How many fps does your 3d setup give after calling
'glxgears'??

2) Did the 'lockups' typically happen in the context of switching to fullscreen mode?

I get from 358 to 424 fps from glxgears.

The lockups don't seem related to any big window change. So far, I've experienced it only when viewing the earth. If I select the earth from the browser, and choose goto, Celestia moves me to the earth, and then stops, but at this point, nothing works. I can move my mouse pointer, but that's it--I can't even get to a console window (alt-ctl-f1, etc) or kill x (alt-ctl-backspace). The only button that works is the power.

I'll have to see how long I can go without any problems. Everything looks good until the lock-up.

I'll also try the low-res textures to see if that helps.

I'm just sort leery of doing the powercycle too often.

thanks

Your 3d graphics performance is really quite horrible. Even with my old GeForce 2GTS card, I get 2500 fps with glxgears. Celestia deserves something better than a INTEL 810E onboard chip! All I can tell you is that most of us do not experience any instabilities whatsoever (provided there is a decent 3d graphics card!).

So, I guess that I should get a 'real' video card. Is it pretty easy to install and get that configured for my Mandrake system?

Do you think that is at the root of my problems?

thanks

It would certainly help if you get a 'real' video card as you say. But before you buy anything make sure that you'll be able to install it on your system, some motherboards with onboard video don't have an AGP port.

Installation and configuration is not difficult, but it really depends on your level of familiarity with computer hardware and Linux.
