Gordon,

The first thing to do is to download and install the current version of the graphics drivers for your graphics card. They're usuallly provided free of charge on the Web site of the manufacturer.

The symptoms you show are usually caused by bugs in the OpenGL device driver of the graphics card. Celestia v1.3 uses features of OpenGL v1.4 which may not be properly implemented in the version of driver that is installed on your system.

You can disable and step through at least three levels of rendering in Celestia by typing a Control-V several times. The Control-V command will flash a message in Celestia's window telling you which rendering path is in use each time you type the command. Please report which path shows the problems you see.

It also would help if you could provide the details of the model of card and version of device driver that is installed.

Hi Selden,

Sorry for not giving more details.

So I have :

PC with Win XP Pro updated
AtI Radeon 8500 / 64 mo
I have updated the drivers (the one before was not so old ;-) to version 7-84-03022a1-008040c-efg

For the OPEN GL version I don't know (was not able to find this)

The problem remains the same (even its worse - see the new picture on my first message)

When I do ctrl+V it says OPENGL Vertex prg.

I don't if there a link but I have also some problems with bumpmap (I have ti disable the lines in the solarsys otherwise the planets appear black.

So if someone could tell me if it is only a personnal configuration problem (and how to fix it) or if its a compatibility problem with ATI...

Thank you

Gordon

Press Ctrl+V until you see 'Basic' . . . This should fix all the problems, though you won't see bump mapping or specular reflections. Press Ctrl+V again and you should see 'Multitexture' flashed. This render path is higher quality than Basic, but still should not suffer the problems of the OpenGL Vertex Program path . . .

Any other ATI users having this same problem?

Precision : the problem as something to do with the rings. without rings it's ok.

Saturn and Uranus texture problems

Post #7by Solneman » 18.04.2003, 09:53

Hi,

I copy my questions here from userforum because I think it's the better place  ... and hi again Gordon!

Hi all,
have a Radeon 9000. Saturn has corrupted Texture and makes the program "not responding" for Win XP. Version 1.2.5 had no problems. BTW: First time that "specular highlight" (or something shiny  ) works for me!
Again and again: Greatest star program ever. Thank you a lot for your work!
Greets and ... PEACE!

...same problem (as described for Saturn) with Uranus... flickering corrupted texture (black holes in texture, program just before freezing)... perhaps the rings cause it  ? Hey, and "bumpmapping" seems to function for me the first time - I first recognized it with Mercury and Mars...
...and: do this ATi shaders work now, because the "greyed out" menu-items (just working for nVidea in 1.2.5) have disapeared?

hi solneman,
I have the problem with my ATI 8500 and XP and it's related to the rings (that s why uranus and saturn are concerned).
One solution (not the best) is to go to the solarsys file and to desactivate the lines describing the rings.

I've signaled this problem when the first pre-releases of 1.3.0 were commited on CVS.
http://ennui.celestiaproject.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1867

I think that the problem is in the vertex shader that produces the shadows on the rings.

Problems :(

I have the same problems here. I use ATI Radeon 8500 64 MB with Catalyst 3.2 drivers (the latest) on Windows XP Pro with SP1. I didn't have any problems with Celestia 1.2.5. The texture problem is visiable on Saturn and Uranus and the rendering is very very slow when looking in directon of those two planets. I hope this gets fixed soon as this is otherwise a great program.

I get a slightly different problem. Here's my setup

AMD AthlonXP 2100+
512MB PC-2700 RAM
Windows 2000 SP3
ATI Radeon 8500 128MB, with absolute latest drivers (just got back from reboot after installing)
Celestia 1.3.0

Here's a pic.

I find out this morning that disabling the ring shadow in the view option menu makes things go better. It stays very slow but you can see planets with good textures and rings.

My 9700 Pro with Cats 3.2 works fine. It must be specific to 9000s and lower. Incidentally i found a small bug. Toggling atmospheres with ctrl a also is counted a just a and acclerates you. Which can be more than a little confusing when you are tying to follow satellites.

Could someone with a Radeon 8500 or 9000 post a list of OpenGL extensions from the OpenGL Info dialog in the Help menu? I have an idea of what might be going wrong, but I need to see the extensions list to be certain.

Same problem...

Club ATI Radeon 9100 128Mb DDR, Athlon TB 1,33 512Mb and excatly the same problem as described above. The photos above were similar as my views have been... Please! fix this problem, it paralyzes the program quite badly. Also problems with Pluto and Neptune, can't see the sunny side... Otherwise this program would be marvelous!

I have found the OpenGL guide for ati cards on ati site :

http://mirror.ati.com/dhttp://mirror.ati.com/developer/atiopengl.pdfpereveloper/atiopengl.pdf

On pages 3/4 there is a comparison of extensions handeld by each ATI card series. It shows diffences between 9700 series and the other series. As Celestia works well for 9700 series the problem maybe comes from one of these extensions.

Hope this can help finding where the problem is, and maybe fixing it.

Just want to say that OpenGL Info for Radeon 9000 says all the same as for Radeon 8500, so I won't post it again. I went back to 1.2.5 wich lacks some nice features like bumpmapping and specular highlights (hmm... an such things, I think  ), at least for Radeons, but is fully compatible for my video system. I hope a patch or updated application will be released soon... this program really is my favorite toy
