Hello... A question for Chris really...

A lot of questions about ssc and other data files...directory structures...over writing previous installs...and other 'tricky' stuff.

I'm a bit reluctant to install the latest version due to lack of data loss.

Do I back-up all my previous data first.? What will I loose if I choose to install the new version over the old one? Do I have to hand code new ssc and other files?... models, extrasolar...data?

I'm happy with the present version 1.2.25?... Shall I wait...or go for it?

bh...confused.

Why not just install the new version into a different folder?

Just to reiterate what Chris suggested:

Celestia is happy running from any directory you put it into. The install procedure puts up a browser window asking what directory to use. You don't have to accept the default.

Right now I have more than a half-dozen different copies of Celestia on my home system. As soon as I install a new version, I immediately make a second copy of that directory, just to make sure I have an unmodified version readily available for comparison when I've botched something.

V1.3 does get associated with .cel files and urls as its being installed, so only the most recently installed version (not the copy of it) gets invoked when you select a url or .cel file. If you're feeling adventurous, you can use regedit to change which version has that association, though. That's actually easy to do.
