The Spin About Spinning...

Just wanted to know if the incorrect direction of orbits and planet spin
will be fixed in 1.2.4. I know Chris said it was just a slip of a sgn.

Glad my forum subject about the future of Celestia invoked
some dialog about it.

New Subject - Last night, just when everything seemed to be
working, I discovered that every time I traveled to the ISS, Celestia
crashed (on NT4 - "Application Error") just as it arrived to it. Even if
I started up Celestia to it's default position and atitude at Io, and
then hit return and entered "ISS" and return, it would crash. I turned
off eclipse shadows, but that didn't make any difference (should space
craft have immunity to eclipse shadowing? Is it necessary?). The model
for the ISS has a lot of polygons - maybe it's a memory-usage problem?
Also, I went to Hubble, Mir and all the other space craft and didn't have
any crashes. Just ISS. Go figure.

I also have a couple suggestions - I'll put that up on the user's forum.

I got the same error under XP with 1.2.3...

System specs GeForce Ti200 64 meg video
Intel 1.5 gig
ASUS P4B Mother
384 megs RAM

I notice tha the model is a cms format...Would this be the reason? Or possible code got changed somehow...Seems to happen with some of the asteroids in that format every so oftem...

Also when this variable is used BlendTexture True...
I'm trying to teach the cavemen how to play scrabble, its uphill work. The only word they know is Uhh and they dont know how to spell it!

Nevermind...ISS is a 3ds file and I fixed it...

http://cybermindtraveller.freewebspace.com/files/iss.zip
^fixed 3ds file in ZIP format...Just copy to the models directory when extracting...

I think the problem lies in too many seperate objects needed to be loaded at once...There were over 20+ objects in ISS so I made it one object...

I hope shrox doesnt mind I did this, I think it was his model...

Thanks. Unfortunately, I'm having periods where I go to different places,
including planets, moons, etc. and having crashes. I just hope these are
bugs that will just go away with the next version.

Like which ones? Are any of them asteroids? I havent noticed but a few crashes with asteroids here and there...Those are in cms format, so unless I can find a way to convert these to 3ds, I couldn't fix those...but if those do pose a problem I can always render new ones as 3ds...and post a patch...

Actually I'm getting intermittent crashes traveling almost anywhere. Most
often are asteroids and moons. Until I see a clear pattern, it's hard to
reproduce the problem. I appreciate the Iss.3ds model. I couldv'e done
the same thing - didn't know it could be a problem in itself. I guess as
time goes on you and Chris will diddle these kind of bugs out (fingers
crossed). If cms format is a problem for Celestia in general, I guess
it should be phased out.

The cms format will eventually be phased out . . . it's a Celestia-specific format of very limited utility. I'm not sure why either CMS files or the ISS model would cause Celestia to crash. I'll work on adding some better debugging and error handling to try and catch these problems.

I've already fixed it . . .
Just so you know, the focus of 1.2.4 is stability, bug fixes, and integration of the Mac OS X changes into the main code base. I was going to try and get comets working, but I've put that off until 1.2.5.

Thanks, Chris. When is 1.2.4 coming out? I'm also wondering if installation
of this next version will not double up in the registry, and rather install
over an earlier version? (WinNT)
