undeletables

Hi...I'm new to Celestia. I just dl'd the portable version for use on my flash drive. Install went smoothly except when I open the folder extras there is another called tor. I opened it and all kinds of crazy stuff for folder names. Square boxes, nonsense symbols I've never seen before, I looked into the textures folder and I'm in medres and finding jpgs without a size. Try to open to see an image and it comes back file is corrupt and unreadable. One in particular...amalthea.jpg.
Now...this is not the first time I've installed it. It's the second. First time around everything worked fine until I downloaded add-ons from the motherlode website. I started getting all kinds of crazy stuff. Some of which I just described. That's where the undeletables came from. I try to delete this nonsense things and they will not delete! They'll vanish sure but come back again like ghosts. Weirdest thing I've ever seen. Now I'm trying to get rid of the whole thing. No sense having something I can't use right? Nope...will not delete! Won't move and/or copy. Files are unreadable and corrupt. Question...what the hell do I do now????

I'd be concerned that your flash drive is failing. They do have a limited number of read/write cycles. It's in the 10s of thousands, but if you've had the flash drive for a year, you might have exceeded it.

If you already have Celestia installed on your system's hard drive, the easiest way to install Celestia on a flash drive is simply to drag the Celestia folder from the hard drive to the flash drive. Since it's a separate "disk", the default is to copy the entire directory tree and not to remove it from its original location.

What's the format of your flash drive? NTFS or FAT32 or what?
Which operating system are you using? Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Linux, Mac OS?
Please specifiy the link from where you downloaded the Celestia archive that gave you trouble.
What do you mean with the portable version of Celestia?

It was the 1.6.0 paf.exe or exe.paf...
I deleted the whole thing. Well...as much as would delete that is. Tried a reinstall. Didn't work. The moment I downloaded the add-ons for the planet tours i.e. Enhanced Tour Jupiter, Enhanced Tour Saturn, Neptune, Uranis. Not the minimal ones. I get jpg's with no weight to them. It'll start out at say 4.5kb then put it in the medres folder it's down to 0 bytes. And cannot be deleted. I got a new app to erase it and it erased all but tor and the textures folders. It says the files are corrupt and unreadable. I want this thing off my drive. I have no problem with any other app. I downloaded the app from portableapps.com and am using XP SP2 but it is not my machine. It belongs to a center I hang at. The flash drive's FS is NTSF.

Well first of all. If you downloaded it from "portable apps" it is not the official release!

And second the described behaviour is very dubious. You better run a couple of up to date antivirus scans on the computer and especially the drive! And also other malware detectors!!

4.5 kB for medres textures is way too small. And in the normal installation of Celestia there is definitely no subfolder "tor" within the "extras" folder.

If you find anything dubious during the scans, report it here and also on "portable apps".

Regards,

Guckytos

Ashalee 010,

please note that this stuff that you downloaded has NOT been endorsed by us, the Celestia developers! If you want to use it, you are on your own...

Formally, the same holds for any add-ons from the Motherlode. These constitute contributions by Celestia users, not by the Developer team. Anyway, the Motherlode represents a central place for Celestia add-on downloads. Problems are usually reported and discussed here.

Yes, it is that old...
I just didn't think that anyone cared about those tours enough to
revise them...
Also, have just undergone open-heart surgery and had four arteries
bypassed, so it may take me a while to get back into the swing of
things.

Wow, Bob,...that was a "big deal"!

But you sound well and with some luck you will indeed be a "new man" quite soon...

All the best for the recovery,

Bob,

As the title of this tread already foresaw: You're undeletable
Wish you all the best and get back in swing again soon.

By the way, your planet tours did alway inspire me, and updates are always welcome to me

Well, I *would* like to redo them now, so maybe I'll give it another try here shortly.
Would be nice to do a Mars tour with new data, and less eye distractions. :D
