Scaled disc star style problem?

Post #1by cartrite » 01.09.2009, 18:55

I'm not sure if this was reported before but when star style is in scaled discs mode, planets and moons viewed from a distance look way to big when the texture is replaced by a white circle. Here is a few pics.

Yes, confirm this behavior (and the stars losses their atmospheres)

This behavior in scaled discs mode is intentional. The size of the discs is based on the apparent magnitude of the planets. As seen from Earth, the Moon, Venus, and Jupiter can be much brighter than stars, so their discs are quite large. As the apparent size of the planet increases, the glare disc fades out to show the planet rendered as a textured sphere. This transition could be adjusted so that the planet is shown as a sphere when it's only a 3-4 pixels in size. There's a tradeoff, however: the planet would appear inappropriately dark relative to the stars.

Ok, no problem. Just curious: and what about to completely remove this option from code? Is it hold because low expensive in terms of computations and light in instructions?
