Target name doesn't always find the search term

Target name doesn't always find the search term

Is the target name limited to the solar system or something? It seems to work great some times, but if you jump to a outside star, "Earth" or other common objects are no longer available in the search. Seems this should have access to all objects like the "Goto Object" box. It would also be nice to have the option to have the target name automatically go to the object after hitting enter (instead of having to hit "G" afterward).

Running XP, Celestia 1.5.1, NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GTX

The target will go to outside stars... They may not always show up in the dialog,
but this feature works very well on my system. The target must also exist within Celestia's
universe too.

As far as Earth showing up in the target dialog after going to a star, you won't find it
because it doesn't exist around stars other than Sol. :wink:

Just type an H to get back to Sol, then you'll be able to find Earth again. You can
also simply type a 3 to select Earth when you are in Sol's domain.

I'm afraid I disagree.
It's necessary to keep the SELECT and GOTO actions separate... for example sometimes we want to SELECT an object simply so that we may LOCK with it.
It would be a bad mistake to automatically GOTO every object that is selected, as there are many other reasons to select an object, and to do so would exclude those other possibilities.

The reason why you can't type "earth" while at another star is because planets can often have the same name. For example, there can be several planets labeled "b" or "c" etc.

If you want to jump directly from another star system to a solar system body, the only thing you have to do differently with the "Enter/Name/Enter" method is to

1 hit Enter
2 type the name of the star followed by a slash i.e. "Sol/"
3 start typing the name of the object
4 select it

In fact, it's even easier than that: typing h 3 g will get you home in a few seconds from anywhere in the Celestia universe.
h 6 g will go to Saturn, etc.

I understand the function of other key commands. I suggested it be an option, not a requirement. An optional setting that could be enabled or disabled based on the users preference. Such an option could include a function of Shift-Enter that brings up the menu without defaulting to Goto.... or hitting Shift-Enter at the end of query bypasses the Goto command. There are a number of ways this could be done to provide the easiest methods for the most common functions.

Sorry, but the way I use Celestia I haven't needed to do what you suggest yet.
