Help!! Can't run the program!
Help!! Can't run the program!
I downloaded a 1.5.1 from this website, but when I finished installation and wanted to run it, an error had occured.
It says:" Unknown software exception (0xc000000d), the address is 0x005f2b3a. To end the program, press OK. To debug the program, press Cancel."
And then comes the OK button & the Cancel button.
By the way, my operating system is Windows XP with SP2.
I don't know how to handle the problem. If someone knows please give me some suggestions. Thank you.

Did you get Celestia from HERE?
And, did you get the Windows 32-bit binary executable version?

Re: Help!! Can't run the program!
it has been years sense i have seen this type of error, i don't use windowsUnknown software exception (0xc000000d), the address is 0x005f2b3a
I think you are missing some *.dll's it might be that you don't have a driver or a current graphics card driver installed.
what is your card nvidia or ati or (none , just the "built in chip set ")
and
"And, did you get the Windows 32-bit binary executable version?"
if the non windows were used then nothing would happed and no install
true the linux one will run in Cygwin( some what , at least it did 4 or 5 years ago) and build in MinGW
Re: Help!! Can't run the program!
Exactly what model of graphics hardware do you have and what version of graphics drivers?
Most Celestia crashes are due to bugs in the graphics drivers.
Download and install the most recent graphics drivers from the Web site of the manufacturer of your graphics hardware.

Re: Help!! Can't run the program!
I downloaded it from this site, and mine is a win-32 edition. The installation file name is "celestia-win32-1.5.1.exe".
My graphic card is nvidia gforce 8600gt, and my CPU is AMD Athlon64 x2 3600+
I already have my graphic card driver installed. The previous edition (1.4.1) can properly run on my system. But only 1.5.1 can't.
Thanks for replying me.

wtxceles,
Exactly what version of graphics driver are you running?
The current version for 8000 series cards is ForceWare v175.16
Many new graphics functions are used in v1.5.1 which cannot work with older drivers.

Re: Help!! Can't run the program!
Thanks again. I downloaded a latest graphic driver and installed it. It still doesn't work.
Then I installed it in windows vista and problem stills...
I think there might be a critical bug in Celestia when it works with windows operating system.
I really love Celestia. I can see and even explore the universe as any way I like.
Hope next edition will be better.

Re: Help!! Can't run the program!
So far as I know, you are the only person to report this kind of problem with an Nvidia 8000 series card.
Sometimes the download gets corrupted.
Have you downloaded a fresh copy of Celestia directly from SourceForge?
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... e_id=15061
Too often people say they installed the most recent version of the graphics driver but have an obsolete buggy driver instead.
What is the ForceWare version shown by the Nvidia Control Panel?
Right-Mouse-Button click on the Desktop backdrop image.
In the popup manu, select Nvidia Control Panel
In the Control Panel, select Help/ System Information
Where did you get the driver?
If you did not get it from Nvidia, then it is likely to be the wrong driver.
Also, did you reboot your computer after deinstalling the old driver and after installing the new one?
If you don't reboot both times, the driver won't complain, but it won't install properly.

Selden,
Terribly sorry to bother again, but why is it that Nvidia does not make this information easily (or more prominently) available?
Ulrich has also suggested this approach to updating Nvidia drivers, but I can find nothing in the help text which says that this must be done. In fact, I don't even know HOW to uninstall the old drivers.
Now, thus far, I have had no problems with my card (or updates either), but I'm really curious as to why this is necessary when Nvidia doesn't even make the user aware of this recommendation?

damifino.
The Nvidia deinstall and install programs both generate a popup window under XP asking that you reboot the computer, but Windows gives you the option of doing it later. Presumably Nvidia assumes that "of course" you'll reboot when asked.
Unfortunately, it seems that many people try to save time by selecting the "reboot later" option, and proceed to try to install the new drivers without rebooting. Too often that seems to work, but the drivers really aren't installed properly. As a result, the computer winds up running a mix of old and new code, which might or might not be compatible with one another.

Re: Help!! Can't run the program!
-- Win xp i do not own Vista and NEVER will ---
chris and i disagree on this point , doing it in SAFE MODE.
I like to boot into safe mode( hit f8) during boot and select "safe mode" from the menu .
i use MyUninstal http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/myuninst.html
to remove the windows one first
VERY IMPORTANT REMOVE THE OLD ONE (MS windows OpenGl disabled )BEFORE INSTALLING THE ONE FORM NVIDIA
after it is removed --reboot-- and and boot back into safe mode
and install the new driver from nvidia .
reboot and start normally
start celestia , and if you thing there may still be a problem
from the celestia menu click "help" and then GLinfo
you should be able to copy and past the text into a text editor ( notepad will do)
on windows i like SciTe http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html , and a win installer
http://gnuwin.epfl.ch/apps/SciTE/en/index.html
-- edit--
a word about MS auto update
Microsoft WILL replace the working nvidia driver with there Disabled one if you allow updates to blindly install all packages .Set it to notify and NOT to install then select custom install for the updates and uncheck MS's driver
-- do not let it install --

Re: Help!! Can't run the program!
Thanks very much John, Selden...
However, now I'm just a bit more confused. If you uninstall your current drivers, how does the machine operate at all?
I'm afraid that I simply do not understand this. Would seem that - if you have removed your graphics drivers - then your machine would go BLOOEY when you tried to re-boot it. Is this why you are re-booting into the safe mode, John?
As always I'm afraid, Brain-Dead

Re: Help!! Can't run the program!
Bob,
It doesn't delete the dumb graphics drivers that Microsoft provides with Windows. Nvidia's uninstall program deletes only the addon-drivers provided by Nvidia. When you reboot without Nvidia's drivers, it uses the ones from Microsoft.

Re: Help!! Can't run the program!
Well, I just went through my entire Nvidia control panel and found that:
1. There is NO option available in my Nvidia Control Panel to automatically update the drivers as was indicated on the Nvidia web site.
2. The download process I have been using is apparently initiated by HP, and NOT by Nvidia.
3. I submitted a survey response to indicate my dissatisfaction with support for Vista users as noted by the statement given on Nvidia's web site (See below.)
4. Most of the manual update process left me in a state of complete confusion. There are many programs listed as being designed for Nvidia on the web site, but there is NO indication that Celestia is even supported at all. Why is this?
5. After some investigation, it seems that you people are absolutely correct. I had downloaded and installed the latest drivers (via HP), and even though I thought I was getting the latest Nvidia drivers, my control panel indicates that I'm still using a very old version of these drivers. So, apparently, what you all are saying here is completely correct. After an installation, (without first removing old drivers) the updated drivers are apparently being merged with the older drivers. Damned confusing mess here in my opinion.
Sorry, just venting here. Haven't learned how to shut up yet.

I have the download, Selden, but I am honestly afraid to install it at this point. It is my (very real) fear that HP is doing something different in order to get these drivers working on my machine. Then, too, the Vista thingy bothers me a lot.
Methinks that I will first back up everything on my system, and then maybe give it a try.

Re: Help!! Can't run the program!
In my case, I simply cannot update the drivers from the Nvidia web site. This is due entirely to the manufacturer of my HP Pavillion m9047c.
If I try an automatic update (via the Vista Control Panel and Device manager), Nvidia displays errors after about 15 minutes of attempting to install the new drivers automatically.
The error messages I get tell me to go to my hardware vendor in order to download the latest drivers for my machine. Mayhap this is the reason an automatic uninstall is NOT done first.
If I try a manual download for my particular machine, I can get an .exe file, but when examined via the Control Panel and the Nvidia Device Manager manually, it tells me that "No new updates" can be found. This occurs even though I am browsing through the directory which actually contains the very latest download for my machine and O.S.
So - just for others here who may not understand all of this gobbledygook - I think that the best thing to do is to download the current drivers available from your own particular hardware vendor. This is certainly true in my case, so I'm going to download the latest Nvidia driver updates from HP. Then, I'll uninstall my current drivers and see if the new ones can be installed this way.

Re: Help!! Can't run the program!
Bob,
Best of Luck!
Under XP, as you may recall, there's no auto-install of graphics drivers. The closest thing to that is when Windows offers to search for and install drivers when it detects that you've rebooted after deinstalling the previous drivers. One must cancel out of that offer. That "wizard" is not appropriate for installing third party graphics drivers for XP. One must explicitly run (double click on) Nvidia's installation program.
