1. Turn down Ambient Light (shift [ )

2. Upgrade to the current graphics drivers.
They're available for download for free from the manufacturer of your graphics hardware, not from Microsoft (assuming you're running Windows).

If those suggestions don't help, you will have to provide many more details about your computer configuration (software and hardware) as well as a Cel URL for that point of view.

I'm running on Windows XP Professional SP2, 1.6 Ghz CPU, 16x DVD-ROM Drive, Celestia 1.5.1.

Will does the bug fix in Celestia 1.6.0, in that light?

Ouch,

Exactly what graphics hardware is in your computer and what version of graphics drivers are you using? Some of that information is available in Celestia's menu Help/OpenGL Info

Lighting will have some substantial enhancements in v1.6, including what's called High Dynamic Range and satellites illuminated by planetshine, but none of that is in v1.5.1.

If you're trying to report a problem with v1.51, you'll need to provide a Cel://URL so that other people can duplicate the viewpoint to see what's wrong. Depending on what you're looking at, it might be what you're supposed to see. To create a URL, type a Ctrl-C to Celestia while you're looking at the problem, and then type a Ctrl-V to your Web browser to insert that URL into your post.

Ouch,

What version of Nvidia ForceWare drivers are installed?
To find that out, right-mouse-button click anywhere on the screen backdrop. You should get a popup menu which includes the entry
NVIDIA Control Panel
If you don't see that entry, then your drivers are obsolete and need to be updated.
left- or right-click on that entry.
In the new popup window,
select the menu Help
select the entry System Information
in the new popup window, what does it say on the line
ForceWare version?
It should be v169.21 or later.

I have not been able to duplicate your problem.
I don't know if it's because I can't find your viewpoint
(please provide the Cel url as described above)
or because your MX graphics hardware is rather old and has a bug in its design
or because your OpenGL drivers are rather old (v1.5, current are v2.1.2) and have their own bugs.
I don't know if your OpenGL drivers are old because newer ForceWare drivers for your hardware don't include the newer OpenGL code
or if you haven't updated your ForceWare drivers recently.

New drivers are available on the Nvidia Web site at

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
