ATI has been known to take a while to get the bugs out of their drivers. However, their cards do seem to be more appropriate if you're into "home theater PC" applications instead of 3D gaming. Apparently their video overlay circuitry is more linear than Nvidia's, for example, and the features used for DVD decompression are somewhat more effective.
