ElChristou,

Can you provide a Cel:// URL that demonstrates the orbit problem: one that works and one nearby that fails? Asking Chris to hunt around for a failing viewpoint is unfair, I think.

The problem described by ElChristou is related to the one I've already described : Orbits are unreliable. They tend to disappear in other systems with more than one star.

I have not yet been able to reproduce this problem. I'm going to need some more assistance to track down the cause. I fear that it may be graphics chip or driver specific.

I have the feeling it isn't the case. Drivers may just "reveal" the bug, and I'm pretty sure it's in Celestia. Of course, I can be dead wrong. I'll try to isolate the cause, but it's unpredictable.

it would be VERY valuable to know WHAT bugs you fixed precisely in your large checkin tonight. Are these just the 3 you were mentioning above?

How about your star code? Anything improved there?

I haven't touched the star code since I fixed a glare fade bug a few days ago. The bugs that I did fix are the ScriptOrbit slowdown and the 3 that I mentioned above: LongLat precision, jittering location labels, and disappearing location labels.

It's possible I broke something else, though I'm not sure exactly how . . .

Chris,

The LongLat positions are fixed! Thanks.

I rebuilt Celestia at 6am EST, before the Location fixes were uploaded. I'll test them when i get home this evening.

[edit]
Fwiw, these problems were encountered while trying to make a model of the new Physical Sciences building that'll be constructed on the Cornell Campus starting next summer.

It'd be really nice if someday Location recognized
Type "Building"

"Crater" and "Other Feature" just don't have the right connotations, although "Crater" certainly will be an apt description for a while. ;-)

I'm still experiencing this dashed orbit problem. It's universal : it's occuring in all systems, and always when an object (asteroid) is shown on front and orbits in the background :

Image

EDIT : Chris, I'm sure this bug is triggered by the model. As soon as I get far away from it, the orbits are all back to normal. But when I get closer to the asteroid, the holes reappears in the orbits. This is systematic. There's a problem with the orbital path code. Looks like another depth sorting bug (?).

Well indeed on my config this bug is so commun that you can find it almost immediatly...

here is one, if I move a bit (roll, yaw, pitch) the orbits disapears...
cel://Freeflight/2006-12-08T19:45:16.20911?x=AAcb9H9K8CxN+////////w&y=eAosfOXfeOvVAQ&z=AKP/k6Ql38EjBA&ow=-0.899464&ox=-0.194599&oy=-0.380703&oz=0.090335&select=Sol&fov=25.673862&ts=1.000000&ltd=0&rf=55287&lm=2050

here they are rendered:
cel://Freeflight/2006-12-08T19:49:13.00509?x=gC90ZR7X8nMnBw&y=5P+YjA/6ll+9/v///////w&z=AAUaF7uv6kA1Bw&ow=0.115436&ox=0.366089&oy=-0.113738&oz=0.916361&select=Sol&fov=25.673862&ts=1.000000&ltd=0&rf=55287&lm=2050

here not:
cel://Freeflight/2006-12-08T19:50:02.30911?x=AMx6AKzClQIXBw&y=LFT9dPJ5B71v/////////w&z=AJcJQmTZ46lbBw&ow=0.128421&ox=0.364689&oy=-0.081379&oz=0.918633&select=Sol&fov=25.673862&ts=1.000000&ltd=0&rf=55287&lm=2050

The global feeling is that the orbit code is still buggy...

More:
105 UA from Sol, no more orbits:
cel://Freeflight/2006-12-08T19:57:26.09447?x=gMyEnksUqro//v///////w&y=JBoOlelC0DIsBA&z=AOf3SaVdq8+zBA&ow=0.927513&ox=0.344947&oy=0.143972&oz=-0.001825&select=Sol&fov=25.673862&ts=1.000000&ltd=0&rf=55287&lm=2050

137 UA from Sol, orbits fine:
cel://Freeflight/2006-12-08T19:58:53.34449?x=APN5oC2AwQq/&y=fFrvtZYCnLer+P///////w&z=AE1AvzifbT8wBA&ow=0.853895&ox=-0.502116&oy=0.027332&oz=-0.134150&select=Sol&fov=25.673862&ts=1.000000&ltd=0&rf=55287&lm=2050

170 UA, adios orbits:
cel://Freeflight/2006-12-08T19:59:46.79856?x=AAnWSraNJMyLAw&y=AM3BX4YBDLmPBA&z=ACUKhDbLjWTPCA&ow=0.957619&ox=0.231817&oy=-0.167763&oz=0.032901&select=Sol&fov=25.673862&ts=1.000000&ltd=0&rf=55287&lm=2050

215 UA, still ok:
cel://Freeflight/2006-12-08T20:00:43.56023?x=gOUvj1fGFQpC&y=7EccwF8ND2KP8////////w&z=AGkEF4TpgalU+////////w&ow=0.506162&ox=-0.722598&oy=-0.391810&oz=0.261030&select=Sol&fov=25.673862&ts=1.000000&ltd=0&rf=55287&lm=2050

261 UA, here is the limit for orbits rendering, after this point nothing when it would be cool to have the orbit of Neptune (in the case pluto is not anymore a planet) rendered at 0,036 LY (when it's label appear)

Of course, I see orbits using all of those urls. :(

What's your hardware configuration these days?

I tested them on my new system at work:

2GB 1.86 GHz Core2Duo (*); WinXP Pro 32bit, SP2
128MB Quadro FX 550, ForceWare v91.36
Celestia from CVS @6AM EST

____
* - It's a Dell Precision 390, for the numerologists.

p.s. i see orbits much further: out to a distance of 0.049 LY. Obviously there are OpenGL compatibility issues in the different models of cards. *sigh*

I see no problem with these urls you posted. All orbits are displayed correctly (I still own a TNT2).

Me too, all orbits are there, using ElChristou's URLs.

Yes, but they are still there.

Still with my poor GeForce4MX 32 mo...

I wish I could have one of these... :)

Chris,

I have the same graphics card as yours, and orbits are correctly displayed on my system from all the URL you've posted...

Could this problem be OS-X specific ?

I do see this kind of problem:

cel://Follow/Geographos/2006-12-08T21:2 ... 87&lm=2050

If you use End key in short presses, the orbit immediately behind Geographos will eventually disappear partially (at a distance range of ~150-2600 km. from the asteroid. Outside of this range everything is solid)

Toti, could you post a screen capture ? Is it similar to what I've shown ?

Seems your TNT is not so bad, at least your orbits are fine! :o

I think it's specific to my config, 10.3.9/GeForce/Celestia 1.5... not a good combination... :?

this is exactly the problem I was describing. So I'm not alone anymore ! Heh !

What's your config ?
