Yep, this is the best Sun ever rendered on my config...
...too bad it's a bug using scaled disk...
Now as such a rendering is possible (and this is not OGL2.0), why not using it in every paths and star styles? (it would be excellent...)

It does look a lot more realistic... I think that's the trick really - have a pure white star with a limb that is tinted the colour of the star. I dunno if the 'haze/flare' around it is realistic but it does make it a lot more real-looking.
I mean, that actually makes me want to shade my eyes from the glare, unlike the default sun that comes with celestia, that looks like a dim mottled sphere.

Another interesting feature of this image (at least on my laptop screen) is that if I grab the scrollbar and slide it up and down, the image of the sun itself appears to "bob" up and down within the image.
Not sure if this is due to a "lag" in the LCD screen, or in my retina, but freaky either way!

No, Andrea, this is a BUG... the Sun in reality is very tiny in relation with this glowing sphere...
Well, it'd be nice if it was the size it was supposed to be and looked like that...
Maybe this is one of those accidental useful discoveries, like Penicillin

Perhaps performances?
The new star rendering does not require OpenGL 2.0; it does need support for vertex programs and point sprites. Performance is one of the main benefits.
