Exactly what hardware do you have, what version of driver did you install, where did you get it, and how did you do the installation?

What hardware and version of OpenGL does Celestia's help menu show is installed? (This is not the same as the manufacturer's version number for the full driver, which includes OpenGL as just one of its components.)

What version of Celestia are you running?
Which render paths show the bug? (Type a Ctrl-V several times to step through them.)

I have a vague recollection that a similar bug was seen in a very old version of Celestia.

It's easy to take shortcuts that won't install drivers properly although they seem to work. In particular, installing new drivers "on top of" old ones does not work. It may claim to have installed the new ones and may even show the new driver version number, but it'll still be using the old ones.

You have to
a. download new drivers
b. deinstall the old drivers (use the Control Panel/Add or Remove Software menu)
c. reboot
d. cancel the offer to install new drivers
e. temporarily disable anti-virus software
f. run new driver install program
g. reboot
h. reenable anti-virus software
i. reconfigure screen resolution & color

hi. sorry for the delay. thanks for your patience

I'm running on an AMD Turion 64 mobile with an SIS M760GX graphics adapter. I'm running the current version of the drivers. I installed it as you mentioned. the driver came direct from the SIS website

the OpenGl version appears to be 1.4.0

I'm running Celestia verison 1.4.1

the only render path that shows the error is multitexture

What render paths do you see besides Basic and Multitexture?

Are you saying that you can see the render path "OpenGL vertex program" and that the shadow of the planet on the rings looks OK there?

Unfortunately, my impression is that SIS tends to have buggy drivers and that, if the vertex program path looks OK, that this is a bug in their code :(

You should report the problem to SIS. Maybe they'll be able to provide a version of the drivers that fixes the problem.

you're right, I have heard of some problems with SIS drivers in several instances as well. I wasn't sure that this particular "bug" was necessarily with their driver or such

however, I don't have the OpenGL vertex render path. ctrl-v only cycles between basic and multitexture. is this a whole new can of worms?

No, it's the same can ;)

The SIS graphics chipset in your computer simply doesn't have the more advanced OpenGL functionality that is needed in order to display a lot of the eye-candy that's available in Celestia. OpenGL v1.5 or, preferably, v2.0 would be better.

If your system can accept a plugin graphics card, you might consider adding one that uses an Nvidia graphics chipset. An inexpensive 5000 series card would be fine for now, although Chris is considering some future enhancements that would require hardware features that the 5000 series doesn't have. ATI cards (9500 or better) should work, too, but their OpenGL support tends to have more bugs.
