(downloaded) Galaxies are too bright

Hello ewerione! Im new here, and y allready have a problem! :D lol

Y have dlyed about 20 galayies from http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/catalog/galaxies.php

And when y installed them as told, they are really disturbingly bright!!!

Magnitude doesent change it until lower than 4.58! heh, but then they dissapeare! and shift + 9 or shift+8 doesent work for them! or altGr+f/g

Does anybody know what can be done? (everithing else works- y`ve downloaded many objects)

Since you did not precisely list the add-ons that you have downloaded from ML, I can NOT tell you precisely which of those are outdated and hence not working anymore with Celestia 1.4.1. Please note, the adaptation of add-ons to the latest Celestia code is the responsability of the add-on creators, and NOT of the development team! Most add-on creators do not care anymore to upgrade their older add-ons to the current code. That's the problem.

If you look at the problematic galaxies' .dsc files, you will surely note that the ones that are way too bright are lacking an absolute magnitude entry. The latter is required by the current code! So what do you suggest with which brightness Celestia should display these outdated add-ons ? ;-) . Look at the official deepsky.dsc file to infer the format of the absolute magnitude entries!

Unfortunately, that page provides pictures of galaxies which are defined as Celestia Nebula DSC objects.

Can AbsMag and AppMag be used for Nebula objects?

Sorry Selden,

I only start spending my time on this issue if the guy manages to specify precisely WHICH galaxies turned out too bright.

Also these add-on galaxies are surely contained in my deepsky.dsc standard NGC/IC catalog with 10000+ objects. So they will be displayed twice, presumably with add-on coordinates of worse precision than in my deepsky catalog file.

Or are you implying that the Magnitude values haven't been implemented for Nebula objects?

I didn't answer your question, because that requires digging in the code quite a bit.

The DeepSkyObject class requires absMagnitude. The Galaxy and Nebula classes are derived classes from the DeepSkyObject class . But I do not recall anymore off-hand what work-arounds we have implemented to incorporate "old add-on" definitions into the new scheme. That requires work. In any case the work on nebulae is highly unfinished.

Personally, I only look into add-ons if I get their precise specifications.


Anyway, I have a number of /genuine/ Nebula add-ons in my installation that work perfectly fine. Like M1_Crab Nebula, M42, RCW79_3D,...

AbsMag does not affect the brightness of Nebula objects.

It does affect whether or not they're drawn and whether or not their labels are drawn.


e.g.
AbsMag 9 causes a Neblula to be drawn if Magnitude Limit is 10.0 or greater. Its label is drawn if Magnitude Limit is 11.4 or greater.
AbsMag 5 causes a Neblula to be drawn if Magnitude Limit is 8.0 or greater. Its label is drawn if Magnitude Limit is 9.2 or greater.
With no AbsMag declaration, a Nebula is always drawn.

This is with AutoMag disabled and FOV at about 56 degrees.

Apparently some more work is needed on that code :)

This is using Celestia v1.4.1 final.

Y have already figure it out. it was "Real galaxies 04-04-08.zip" (all of them) :wink: , they are really not worked out so there is no need to bother.

Have downloaded for 1.3 gigs lol and my 2 gb of ram are not enough any more ! :cry:
