On my PC I'm using two versions of Celestia: One more or less for solarsystem with related AddOns and the other version for all kind of Deepsky Objects with mostly nebula's as Add on.
Lately I've installed a third version namely the FT version 1.2.
Both the solarsystem version(1.40pre7) and the the FT one are working fine except for a Red earth in a certain rendering mode. This problem has been solved by using the version of nVidia drivers previous to v81.nn.
The case is that since I've installed Celestia 1.40.FT.1.2 (downloaded from the doctor F-site)the version used for Deepsky Objects will show a very, very bright white Milkyway and the AddOns in the extra directory won't load.
All the other versions of Celestia are the same (Downloaded 23-11-2005 from CVS with the FT extensions)
The Deepsky version hasn't been really installed, just only copied a while ago from the other version of Celestia and it was running fine for the Deepsky purpose. Cel-scripts will start automatically the Solarsys-version of Celestia as it should
Something wrong with a Registry setting, which is overwritten by installation of the FT-versions??

When running a version of Celestia based on the current SourceForge CVS code, you need to toggle the option "View Nebulas". Unfortunately, it doesn't have a menu option yet, so you have to type the keyboard command "^" = caret = shift-6.
(On a system that supports diacritical marks, I think you have to type "^ " = caret space. )

Galaxy brightness is affected by two pairs of controls:
reduce limiting magnitude "[" = left square bracket
increase limiting magnitude "]" = right square bracket
reduce light gain "(" = left parenthesis = shift-9
increase light gain ")" = right parenthesis = shift-0
I agree that the minimum galaxy brightness is too bright, though.

Bright Milkyway
Selden,
Maybe with my poor knowledge of the english language I've express myself in a wrong way.
Let me give another aproach to the problem:
Now I have three times the same version of Celestia on my computer
All three versions 1.40pre7_FT1.2 from CVS (23-11-2005)
One example is used for the solarsystem and installed in a normal way
with as much Add-Ons for the Solarsystem(spacecraft, comets etc) my computer can Handle including the normal star.dat and deepsky.dsc database and no deepsky Add-Ons in the extras directory.
A second version of Celestia is in use for Deepsky Objects, of coarse in a different directory. This has been a copy of the Celestia version mentioned above. With in the extra directory only nebula's as Add-on and a normal stars.dat and deepsky.dsc
The third one is originally installed from FT-1.2 from Herr doctor Fridger Schremp and later is only Celestia.exe replaced by the compiled CVS-version. This example of Celestia has the extended deepsky.dsc (10610 galaxies). Further all other deepsky objects as mentioned above by the second example and a minimum of SolarSystem add-ons in the extras directory. This example of Celestia is for the time being for test-purposes.
The problem is:The first and third example are installed in a normal way (with installer software). They don't have any problem regarding the brightness of milkyway and the work as you've mentioned in your previous reply.
However the copied example(the second one) show this kind of very bright Milkyway on startup.
I wonder, If with just only copying Celestia to another directory it seems that the copied Celestia-version has lost the relation with the registry in one way to another. ( Not only the .cel or .celx association )
