Crash on a Savage4 graphic card

Post #1by Calixto » 20.05.2004, 18:56

Dear sirs,

I installed Celestia-win32-1.3.1-1.exe on a Compaq Deskpro PC, Intel Pentium II 400 Mhz, 320 MB RAM, with a Savage4 card (32MB RAM) and Windows 2000 Professional. If I run the program with 16 bits or 32 bits color depth configured, it horribly crashes and hangs the machine. If I try with 256 color depth, it runs ok but, logically, quality is very much poor.
Can you help me to solve this?
Thank you in advance.

Please read the first 4 entries in the "Preliminary User's FAQ", which is near the top of the Celestia Users Forum.

The most likely cause is bugs in the Savage OpenGL driver. Please update your graphics drivers to the very most recent version available. They should be free for downloading from the Web site of the manufacturer of your card.

Another way to check this is to disable all hardware acceleration. Then you will be using Microsoft's software-only OpenGL drivers. They'll run slowly and don't have all the features, but shouldn't crash.

go to display properties->settings->advanced->troubleshoot->hardware acceleration->none

It works under WindowsXP, and will work under Windows2000 I think.

I have similar problem with my VIA/S3 KM266 chip, and it's because S3 make really bad drivers...
