Bob,
Well, we aren't that far apart...
Pre11 has three different star representations: disc (new), fuzzy points (old) and points (old). You can type a Control-S to toggle among them.

So you've gone back to a previous version of the texture? Do I take it you've tried the current (ie downloaded as part of 1.3.1pre11) 1024x2 texture and it didn't work? That's a real problem, if so.Bob Hegwood wrote:I simply found a saturn rings texture PNG at CVS that was sized at 1024 x 64, and the thing now looks BEAUTIFUL as it should.

Grant,
I don't THINK that I tried the rings that came with 1.3.1...
Heck, I've tried so MANY versions of the rings textures that I just don't remember.
At any rate, all is now well. A bit of advice for anyone ELSE who tries to use textures which are larger than they should be... I found a great, free program called Pixia which I will now use from here on out to resize PNG files.
It allows you to create a re-sized, EXACT duplicate of the texture you're interested in, and displays everything you need to know in order to save the transparency information, etc.

Trust me, this is a GREAT addition to the Celestia Addict's Tool Bag.
Take care, Bob

To me it looks as if the ring image, in the medres folder, is not transparent .

Read the posts above, John...
I *did* get the problem solved using a program called Pixia. It wasn't the transparency so much as it was the SIZE of my textures.
Thanks anyway.
Take care, Bob
