This program works great, if you computer is EXACTLY like Chris's. For everybody else, toss a coin in the air. I was under the impression OpenGL was a hardware-independent solution to displaying graphics, apperantly I was wrong. Only NVDIA users get the full rendering effects. Only NVDIA users seem not to get crashes. This program should still be in ALPHA stage, not public distribution. And why download the full package everytime a bug fix comes around? do the graphics change that much? Ever heard of patches? Some people are on dialup, you know.
It's a great concept, just waaaaaay too buggy.
A great program for NVDIA owners
I suspect this Average Joe is rather frustrated because Celestia doesn't work for him. If he were willing to tell us what his system configuration is and what version of Celestia he's trying to run, someone might be able to help.
Don't forget that Celestia v1.2.5 crashes on systems that use Microsoft's software OpenGL v1.1 drivers. I'm sure that's been a frustration for a lot of people who don't read this Web forum and thus don't know that v1.3 fixes it -- or that they need to install the most recent drivers from the manufacturer of their graphics card.
After all, 3D games run just fine on everything. Why shouldn't Celestia?
(that's a rhetorical question -- most people reading this know why not.)

Ahhh yes, I am that average joe, with an ancient videocard and win2000 and no love from the crashing ASAP to desktop. Average yes, but also interested. I hope the prerelease I am downloading is the low rez.. ack doesn't look like it.

Anyway I love what you guys do so keep it up.
Unfortunately, if you don't tell anyone exactly what kind of graphics hardware and software you have, it's very unlikely that the problem ever will be fixed.
Some kinds of problems can't be fixed, actually. For example, although they were ahead of their time, the OpenGL (Glide) libraries for 3dfx Voodoo cards had a lot of bugs. Game designers learned to program around them, but Chris has no way to do that. He has to depend on the OpenGL software working the way it should. Each graphics vendor supplies their own.
