I'm using Celestia 1.6.1 on OSX 10.5.8 (PPC), dual 2.0GHz PowerMac G5, ATI X800 (256MB), 4GB RAM.
I get consistent crashes using virtual textures. I've installed (the amazing addons!) jestr's Earth II and JohnVV's Moon, and I've found that after viewing a certain number of textures (by zooming or orbiting) I'll either get the Mac "spinning beachball" followed by a crash: "EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL)" or textures will start going missing like in the screenshot below:
After I start seeing missing virtual textures, random program features stop working, menu items disappear (blank!), and a "EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL)" is guaranteed if I continue.

the old x800 card is a legacy card and only somewhat supports opengl 1.1

also you might be restricted in just how big of images you can load at the same time
for the moon
both texture and Normalmap VT might be just too much for that old x800 card
are you using the proprietary "Catalyst" or the opensource "radeon" driver
As I said, I'm using a Mac (which has the latest drivers). The "Catalyst" driver you linked is only for Windows and Linux.
The X800 supports OpenGL 2.0. I have no problems in other graphics-intensive programs or games.
