Ubuntu Linux version, slow response to mouse movement (fixed

Post #1by smauleon » 22.06.2011, 22:10

I'm neither a scientist nor a hacker, so my problem maybe was very simple. Anyway, it may help somebody.

I registered just to complain about the Linux version. When I used the mouse to move around, it took about a second to respond to it. Celestia was unusable.

I first noticed this problem months ago in a netbook, and I thought the modest hardware was the cause. But now I'm using a new laptop.

Before posting my complain, I entered the settings menu (it's the KDE version). At the "Configure Celestia - OpenGL" tab I marked "Sync framerate to video refresh rate". Now it works well.

Which version of Linux are you running? (what distribution, what kernel, etc)
Which windowing system are you using? (I'm guessing KDE, but exactly which version?.)

Which version of Celestia are you using?
Where did you get it?
(Each version of Linux has its own variants of Celestia, built by different people, available from different places, and possibly with different issues.)

Exactly what graphics hardware is in your laptop? (different kinds of hardware have different problems)
What graphics drivers are installed? (generic, open-source, proprietary, what version number? different drivers have different issues)

Hi,

I am a Celestia developer, regularly building and running all sorts of Linux versions (kde, gtk, qt) of Celestia. I have never noticed a slow mouse response in any of those! Note that I have unchecked the option: "Sync framerate to video refresh rate" in the KDE version. For running Celestia-kde the KDE3 runtime libs are required, while your desktop presumably uses KDE4. Please check that the required KDE3 runtime libs are installed.

Do you load a large number of add-ons (Motherlode) in addition to the default ones? If YES, the loading time could be substantial and make the mouse unresponsive for some time after the booting has started.

Are you sure that you really have direct X11 rendereng activated (with a modern graphics driver)? What happens, if you start the X11 test program 'glxgears'? How many fps does it display?

What do you get from typing this command:

> glxinfo | grep direct

Do you have on-board graphics or a separate graphics card in your laptop? In the latter case, which model?
