Celestia Freezes Randomly

Post #1by PlutonianEmpire » 28.11.2010, 21:41

For some reason, when I'm in the Delta Trianguli system, Celestia freezes randomly. No error message, no crash log, no error log, no shaders log. It just simply freezes.

It is completely random, and I can't reliably replicate it, but it started when I created a new SSC file:

newdeltri.zip

(Huge file)

I am using the standard 1.6.0 release.

System Specs: HP Pavilion dv6815m laptop, 1 GB NVIDIA Geforce Go 7150m graphics, 2 GH AMD Turion 64 Mobile Tech TL-60 processor, 3 GB RAM, Windows Vista Home Premium.

No error file or log file is created when Celestia freezes.

Not a single texture in this system is 4k.

Belle Hades and its moons have only 2k maps.

All the rest are 1k.

The multiple "#blank" 's are basically noise generated by the Asteroid Maker utility available on the motherlode.

Where can I find the windows system log?

It works fine for me on my laptop, but I only looked at it for a short while, visiting most of the planets -- which are blank since I have none of your textures.

If you haven't already, make sure you have the very latest Nvidia graphics driver.
Also, you might try checking the temperatures in your laptop. It might be overheating due to accumulated dust inside. Most systems include temperature sensors which can be viewed using one of the free fan-control programs. I use SpeedFan, but there are others.

I botched the update the last time I tried updating the Nvidia drivers going by the Nvidia drivers thread elsewhere on this forum, and had to revert to the factory default. When I did succeed, the new drivers showed no improvement.

I checked my GPU, and sure enough, it was overheating, at 72 C, indicating that the safety mechanism that stops the overheating at 69 C had failed. I'll try cleaning out the dust sometime this weekend and see if that helps. Fortunately I already have had a second, newer and better, computer for over a year now.

The textures the SSC file references are the globular cluster generator textures that came with the generator utility. I couldn't create original textures even if my life depended on it. I can only mesh and recolor Solar System textures so much before I run out of ideas.

Anyways, thanks for the help. :)
