Bugs in 1.6.0
Bugs in 1.6.0
I've noticed several issues with the newest Celestia build. Most notably, 2 of them come to my attention.
1. Comets. Why is Borrelly the only one with a tail?
2. Nebulas. All nebula packages downloaded from the Celestia Motherlode are rendered with large green squares blocking them. This does not happen in 1.5.0.

Re: Bugs in 1.6.0
As I kow, Comet only has the tail when it is close enought to Sun.
Check the image below which is Halley captured with 1.6.0. Around 1985, you can see its tail.
I'm also checking with Nebula.

Re: Bugs in 1.6.0
This is correct and does happen in 1.5.0, too.
The tail starts fading when the comet is farther then 5-8 AU away from the sun.
It would be a bug if the comet tails did NOT fade...

Re: Bugs in 1.6.0
I just checked several Nebula add-ons and they look fine for me.
They are M1 Crab Nebula, M16 (Transparent images) and 110 Messier Objects (v 3a).
Can you check which add-on has problem? One more thing. Did you try to change rendering path using Ctrl-V?

Re: Bugs in 1.6.0
I have tried four of the nebula add-ons.
The Helix Nebula 3D model, the Eight Burst 3D model and billboard, and the Butterfly nebula M-29.

Re: Bugs in 1.6.0
I tried the Helix Nebula_3D (by the user jll) and everything looks fine on my machine (Linux KDE, NDIDIA graphics card FX 5900 Ultra). Are you sure that your graphics driver is up-to-date?
A general remark:
Please note that add-ons are not in the responsability of the Celestia development team. It cannot be excluded that eventually updates of add-ons may have to be done by the add-on creators to match the actual Celestia core engine. Nevertheless, we always try to retain compatibility as much as possible in forthcoming Celestia versions...

None of the nebulae downloaded from the ML have anything wrong with them on *my* machine.
Just added my favorites with no problems. Perhaps your graphics setup?
Dunno. Just telling you that they all work fine on my machine.

Re: Bugs in 1.6.0
The thing is they all work fine on 1.5.1. I don't see how my graphics card could be any sort of problem between those two versions unless the rendering engine was somehow changed.

Did you try the final 1.6.0 version
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/cele ... e?download
or rather some pre-1.6 version? You should always use the finalized one, since there might have been last-minute fixes.

I've already got that version.

Can you attach a screenshot from a typical nebula that shows these large green squares? Please, let us also know which nebula it is.

These squares around nebulae indicate their size. They are only visible when nebulae labels are enabled. If this is a problem, we may need to add a setting to disable highlighting of deep sky objects. For now, just turn off labels in order to make the green squares go away.

I'm thinking that the green squares are actually a very nice feature...
If this is the "bug" you are referring to here, I kind of like it.
As you mentioned too, when you disable nebulae label rendering, the boxes disappear.
Just FYI...

This solved it.
Thanks loads.

Re: Bugs in 1.6.0
I have downloaded 1.6.0 from here
http://sourceforge.net/projects/celesti ... e/download
I quite like the green squares and circles, but there seems to be a different problem. In Windows XP Celestia displays a persistent red line, which appears to be the ecliptic; nothing I can do seems to get rid of it. Any ideas?

Just use the following celx script one time...
Code: Select all
celestia:setrenderflags{ ecliptic = false }
Worked on my system.
Thanks, Brain-Dead
EDIT: If you need to, you can simply copy the text in the code above, and then
save it as a .CELX file in your scripts directory using Notepad. Then you can find it any time you need it.

Re: Bugs in 1.6.0
Thanks, Bob; that worked very well.
I am going to add a link to a version of 1.6,0 on the Orion's Arm Site. Do they all have this ecliptic line on display? I'm not really interested in where the Earth's ecliptic is when I'm in a different planetary system. Or should I recommend this CELX fix?

As far as I know the ecliptic line shows in all new downloaded versions of Celestia.
Once you run the short script though, it should not show up again. In other words,
you just need to run the script once to repair the problem.
Hope that helps. Thanks, Brain-Dead

Do you mean that the ecliptic line shows up by default in the 1.6.0 Windows version?
That's weird since its renderflag is not enabled by default in the code.
Are you sure you haven't run a script that would have enabled it?
