I downloaded a new texture for earth, but I didn't know where to put it. I did some searches and found that I had to put it in the medres folder in textures. I renamed the original and added the new one, and it looks like this:
I don't know what went wrong. I tried to search on these forums but it wouldn't let me because "earth", "texture", and "problem" were too common to search for (how many people have problems with installing textures?).
The texture I downloaded is the "Real color Earth surface" here: http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/catalog/earth.php
Also, when I looked at the original earth texture it only had water on it, the rest was transparent. So I was wondering: Where is the texture for the land?

Re: Earth texture problem
Can you tell us which graphics card you have? This looks similar to another problem reported recently with ATI graphics cards. It would also be helpful if you could cut and past the info from the OpenGL Info dialog in the Help menu.
The problem you are experiencing is almost certainly a graphics driver bug, and has nothing to do with how you installed the texture.

Re: Earth texture problem
As I mentioned in this thread, I'm getting a similar problem with a similar card model (the x1650).
This appears to happen with any textures larger than 1024 px, though both our configurations report a maximum size of 4096 px.
I'm going to try rolling my driver back to a much earlier version, since the most recent drivers don't work. Also, I'm fairly sure I used to not have a problem on this same hardware config back in the days of Celestia 1.4

Re: Earth texture problem
sgmccabe: Thanks for the follow-up report. It sure does sound like there's a bug in displaying large textures on the Radeon X1xxx serious og graphics cards. The cutoff may be 4096 pixels not 2048. The default Earth texture is 2048x1024--have you had any problems with it? The texture Fredo is having problems with is 4096x2048.

Re: Earth texture problem
I don't recall which textures gave me trouble, but I do remember seeing a bad texture on Earth at some point.
I did roll my driver back, all the way to version 8.4, which resolved the problem. I haven't tried a newer version, however, so I don't know which is the most recent good driver.
