Project Sisyphus - Texturing/painting every exoplanet known

Post #1by Gurren Lagann » 14.03.2020, 21:35

image-8.png
Project Sisyphus logo. By Trolligi.

Welcome to Project Sisyphus!
The goal of the project is to texture every single exoplanet known, despite the ever-growing count of newly confirmed planetary systems.
This is mainly possible with the dedication of the Celestia community.
Also, the textures are completely fictional, but are partially based on real data.

Progress on the systems painted so far, gladly brought by DaveBowman2001.
Nearby exoplanets and systems closer than ten (and 30) parsecs (32.6 and 97.8 ly), for those looking to contribute but haven't decided on what to make. Gladly brought by SevenSpheres. [b](10 parsec exoplanets are all done as of November 15th 2023)

Introduction/Showcase vídeo by Trolligi. Some really underrated but interesting systems are there too!

Main data source (Personal, other contributors might use their own): Sirius_Alpha's exoplanet catalog

First addon:
Proxima Centauri bc!
Proxima-b_Sisyphus.png
Proxima b, a desert world. Uninhabitable due to the superflares from Proxima Cen.

Proxima-c_Sisyphus.png
Proxima c, an ice giant with VERY thin (fictional) rings.

The goal of the project is to texture every known exoplanet. ... Project Sisyphus will only do the confirmed exoplanets.
Do you have a system to automate this? As you are probably aware, as of the last few years confirmed planets have been coming at or above 1 per day. This is an extraordinary amount of work to do manually!

I actually don't, i'm doing all of it manually. I do know that its an extremely difficult task, hence the project's name: Sisyphus.

Also, Barnard's Star b should be coming in a few moments.

Looking good. Keep up the good work! I know it's a whole lot but I think if you want, you can ask or teach other members how to texture planets so that you can at least have some help. Just a suggestion

Other members do make exoplanet textures, which will presumably be part of the project.

Actually, when Gurren first mentioned this on Discord, I thought it would be a single, frequently updated addon supplementing Sirius_Alpha's exoplanet catalog, that would just modify each planet to have a texture (including ones by other members).

Well, I'm aware of those other members having made their own textures. It's also entirely up to them if they want to contribute to the project

I'm giving a little status update now.

Since I have a few other large projects in my responsibility, I have to make an announcement:
Celestians, I need YOUR help!
Anyone can now contribute to Project Sisyphus, while keeping the main goal in mind - we have to texture every single exoplanet.
We have to achieve this goal in a reasonable amount of time, otherwise this project wont be completed in our lifetimes. I know that its a huge project, and that's exactly why I'm inviting the entire Celestia community to contribute on the project!

Also, I will have to make an exception to the confirmed planets rule: Dagon/Fomahault b
While TTarrants certaintly made his side of the argument that the planet doesn't exist, it has come to my attention that the general consensus is that Dagon is a real, confirmed exoplanet.

UPDATE: Screw that part, the consensus shifted to agree with TTarrants. No Fomahault remakes for now.

Really cool! I suggest you also try and make custom star textures - the addon would be even better! Keep up the good work!

There are two unconfirmed exoplanets orbiting Luyten 726-8; all are about the size of Jupiter. Even though they aren't confirmed, why not give them a try?

Source? I've never heard of this; is it one of the old disproven astrometry detections like at Barnard's Star and Lalande 21185? (I know both of those stars are now confirmed to have planets, I mean the claimed detections of Jovian planets in the 1960s.)

I think I've heard of Luyten 726-8 b and c

Also, I'd love to help! But as some of you might know I am bad at making textures, and normally use texture generators ):
