SevenSpheres' Addons

Post #1by SevenSpheres » 11.10.2019, 23:36

Here are some addons I've made. I should probably note that some of the textures in the pictures here are not mine (though at this point most are). The sources are listed in the included readme files. I'm trying to keep all the download links as close to the beginning of the thread as possible, so they're all in this post. See also my celestia.mobi addon page (keep in mind that many addons there were made by me but uploaded by other people, so I'm not necessarily responsible for errors) and my github.io site which has some addons. I keep old versions of addons, contact me if you want them.

License: Generally content I create can be considered CC BY-NC-SA, although content created by other people and included in my addons may not be compatible with this license. Please remember to give credit to everyone who created content that you use. Unmodified content from public domain sources (e.g. NASA) may be used without restriction.

Other threads with my addons:

This thread collects addons by me and others texturing nearby exoplanets (within 10 parsecs).

I've contributed to the Black Hole System addon, the Celestia Worldbuilding Project, and the Darwin IV addon. I've also made some standalone addons for extrasolar objects posted in the Extrasolar, Stars and Exoplanets for Celestia and Project Sisyphus threads. At one point I started work on a Solar System evolution addon project, which is now dead, in part due to constant pestering to release it.

I've also contributed to Celestia's default content, including updating stars; these files can be considered CC-BY.

Solar System:

  • SPICE orbits for Epimetheus and Janus: epimetheus-janus.zip - Last updated 2021-06-19
  • Small addon to make Haumea look a bit better: Haumea_Snowfall.zip - Last updated 2023-04-21
Textures are by Snowfall-The-Cat, not me!

Note: This is now the legacy version of the addon; it can be found along with an updated version here and on celestia.mobi.

  • An interesting low-mass X-ray binary with a planet: MXB 1658-298.zip (now included in the pulsar planets addon)
  • More new textures, for exoplanets within 10 parsecs: NearbyExoplanets.zip (rebooted as its own thread)
  • Catalog of brown dwarfs (requires Celestia 1.6.2 or later): browndwarfs.zip (never finished; replaced by pedro_jg's catalog)
  • Updated location files (incomplete): locations.zip (now redundant to default content)

Woah! You've been a new member for 3 days, and you've shown to us just how much of an expert you are at rendering things and creating stuff for Celestia. Honestly, some members were impressed by your work. Most newbies would not do that sort of thing the way you did, so it's impressive indeed. I'm just curious, were you a member of this Forum before or were you invited over by someone?

Yeah I've been using Celestia and following this forum for a pretty long time, but I'm certainly no expert. I joined to point out some bugs/issues in the current beta versions and thought I might as well upload some addons I had made. There are probably lots of people who use Celestia without being forum members.

Selden even says in the Forum Guidelines:
the Celestia Forum...is read by many more people than those who take the time to write.

I noticed that you're using your own custom textures for TRAPPIST-1. Here is the link to NASA's 2017 and 2018 versions of these worlds, in case if they're preferred.

Makes sense. You appear to be like a longtime member judging by the way you type and present yourself. That's good

I was using a mix of the Celestia Origin textures and the 2018 NASA textures I found on exoplanets.nasa.gov (I think they were the "Color Adjusted" textures). Thanks for that link, I didn't know about it! I will now go update my addon...

Also, did you make this?

New TRAPPIST-1 addon uploaded!

(The textures I had before are indeed the "Color Adjusted" ones, only 2K JPG instead of 8K PNG)

Also, did you make this?

Ah yes, I ‘made’ that Iota Piscium article. The textures are provided by Steve Bower.

I've added some more planets to the main exoplanets addon, and added a pulsar planet addon, in the first post.

I was asking if you "made" the Iota Piscium Celestia addon. Were you also planning to make one for TRAPPIST-1?

Yep, I partially made the Iota Piscium addon - three planets were put into place by Steve, and the other three by me. I've already made the TRAPPIST-1 addon for Orion's Arm Project as well.

So there will be two versions then, one for 50 AT and one for 10,000 AT! Any idea when the article will be on the OA website?

Two versions? How did you know that I made more than one version? :o

Well, in actuality it's three now, though the third one is J2000, and it's mostly for comparison purposes and not for actual uses. Currently working on its article right now. I'll try to write the article up again at some point...

Anyways, I think we should move this conversation to somewhere else.

I didn't, I meant my version and your version. Should have been more clear...

Updates to the first post:

Added some standalone files - ceres_locs.ssc and starnames.dat

Added a brown dwarf catalog. Note that this is a work in progress, and requires Celestia 1.7 because it uses the Y spectral class. I'd like feedback on this from anyone who uses 1.7.

SevenSpheres, could you tell me which stellar catalogs did you use in your starnames.dat files? I have a modified starnames.dat file, which was originally from LukeCel, which has many Variable Star names from GCVS. I added in a few thousand Bright Star (HR) designations and a few new names approved by the IAU since 2016, though it is still not finished. I'm just curious because if your starnames.dat file is much bigger, and therefore has more information, I could save up all of the time I could be spending on adding Bright Star (HR) Designations (I'm still in HR 4550 BTW), and instead, enjoy the use of a much bigger and more accurate starnames.dat file. Thanks in advance

As I mentioned earlier, it's still incomplete, only having around 4550 HR designations(I added in some names yesterday until I stopped at HR 4550), but here ya go:

That being said, I feel that there are some errors in my starnames.dat, and possible double names and numbers, so if you want to correct it, feel free to. I think you can make a much better starnames.dat than I ever could.
