Project "Celestia Origin", release dated April 30, 2018

Post #1by Art Blos » 30.04.2018, 20:30

Dear members of the Celestia community!

We’d like to introduce our Celestia Origin project whose goal is to upgrade Celestia 1.6.1 with the most current information about celestial bodies without modifying the source code. This project is the largest one of its kind in the Russian Internet.

Our team is constantly monitoring space-related news and publications to collect the latest information about known space objects as well as scientific theories. As the result, we have created a unique assembly of Celestia add-ons. Most of the work has been done by the team members, while the rest was acquired from other parties. Each celestial body in our assembly has been updated with all available information, including physical and orbital parameters, alternative naming and topographic locations where available.

Project’s home page is located at https://vk.com/celestiaorigin

Project Members:
  • Artyom Goncharov aka Art Blos - founder and head of the project, chief add-on developer and group administrator;
  • Artyom Volgin aka Zemlyanin - data collection tools, add-on development and scientific advise;
  • Askaniy Anpilogov aka Askaniy - textures, objects and location data;
  • Greg Frieger - creator of the largest database of minor body shapes (https://space.frieger.com/asteroids/), helper utilities and scripts;
  • Anton Sobolev aka Vision - project promotion and support.

The latest version (published on April 30th 2018) includes:
  • 9 planets (including a hypothetical one);
  • 190 planetary satellites (with 4 hypothetical ones);
  • 5 dwarf planets;
  • 9 dwarf moons;
  • 3406 asteroids, 22 binary and 1 trinary;
  • 64 minor-planet moon;
  • 1123 comets;
  • About 2 million stars of the Milky Way;
  • 35597 stars outside the Milky Way;
  • 578 exoplanets (including a hypothetical one);
  • 10943 galaxies;
  • 184 globular clusters;
  • 33 nebulas;
  • 57 spacecrafts.

Installation instructions
1. Use the attached torrent file
Celestia Origin v.5 (30.04.2018).torrent
(15.35 KiB) Downloaded 389 times
or the direct link to download the add-on;
2. Download and install Celestia 1.6.1 from https://celestia.space/download.html ;
3. Unpack and launch “Install.bat” script under administrator’s account (using context menu) and wait for it to complete. Note: the script deletes some of the files from the vanilla Celestia installation, so consider making a backup copy of Celestia installation folder if needed;
4. Unpack and overwrite the content of add-on’s Celestia folder into Celestia installation folder;
5. We’d recommend to run a disk defragmentation before starting the updated Celestia for the first time.

Pleasant flight!

I have a problem to report. Your orbit for the Spektr-R spacecraft goes through the planet Earth instead of around it.
OrbitThroughEarth.jpg

Can you post new orbital parameters in order to fix this?

Yes, indeed. At me all too most.:sad:

In the HORIZONS Web-Interface was an incorrect eccentricity. Try this.

Code: Select all

  Mesh  "spektr-r.3ds"
  Radius  0.0088
  Beginning  "2011 07 18 06:06"
  Ending  "2025 01 01"
  OrbitFrame
  {
     EclipticJ2000  { Center "Sol/Earth" }
  }
  EllipticalOrbit
  {
     Epoch  2458119.5  # 2018 Jan 01

Sorry, I have the same problem of the previous issue, i.e. I'm unable to download the torrent file. :insane:
I use torrents with Tixati, but instead it tries to download the file using the download function of Chrome.
Could you please attach the torrent link, please?
Thanks a lot.

For anyone who cares, I have hosted the latest version along with the others.

http://celestia.simulatorlabbs.com/Downloads/Celestia-Origin/

As I did before, I will be putting together a ready to run version as well.
When downloading, check the date and version very carefully.

Celestia Origin v.5 (30.04.2018).7z

Is what you are after if you want the lastest.

It should be noted, you can organize direct links much better than me. Thank you. :smile: I tried to download the archive on Google Drive, but he always hovered at 74 percent. And Yandex does not allow downloading too many times. :fie:

One question: Why do you keep the old versions? Even I do not keep them. :smoke:

@Art Blos

I did not organize any links in the downloads.
That is simply a directory listing.

I have a vanity domain so that I do not have to fight all the horrid upload download options on the net.
I use dreamhost, they are easy to work with, affordable, and are more concerned with server clogging than storage or bandwidth usage.
I have my rather crude site, my own webmail that I control, a forum, a blog I keep forgetting to update, and nearly perfect uptime.
It also helps that they let you more than one year at a time, not just monthly.

As for the old versions, I always tend to keep the old versions of things.
I do not clean my archives until there is a need.
I quite often refer back to older versions of projects for comparison or inspiration.

@Goofy

I am not sure what you mean by the Dims of the 7z?
If you mean the exact link.
Look for the one with v.5 & (30.04.2018) in it where the size is 3.0G
It is the first one.
The par2 files are much smaller, and for ensuring the download is complete.
Unneeded most of the time, great for avoiding multigig redownloads.

Hi Janus. No, I just downloaded the 7z file, and it is 3.182.020.425 byte, so please can you confirm me that it's the right size?
This because I had a problem with the previous issue, with the downloaded file that was smaller thand it should, so didn't work.
Thank you.

@Goofy

The size of 3,182,020,425 is correct.
That is also why I included the par2 files. (Quickpar, or multipar)
Using them is a quick way to verify archive and if necessary, repair it without a complete redownload.
I have not actually had time to open it yet.
Life keeps insisting that get my current jobs done, and my hobbies suffering for it.

Thank you both, appreciated.

Added after 41 minutes 22 seconds:
Hi.
I was trying the install.bat, but it doesn't allow me to change the destination directory (it was suggested to put Celestia in the C: folder and not in Program Files folder, so...).
What can I do?
Can I simply copy and past, substituting the older files?
Sorry but I'm a noob on this!

All files and folders specified in the script must first be deleted (can be deleted manually). For the script you must have administrator rights.

For those that care I should have a working archive of the latest just like I did the last one, up this weekend in my downloads.
Currently working on merging current code from github with my own fork.
Upgraded Lua to 5.3.4, have static linked VS2013 working in x86 & x64, working on QT now.

I will post details when I have them.

Hello,

I noticed for some asteroids, a display defect for 3D models that you provide in your last package. These asteroids are not displayed:
Golevka (Alinda family Pha)
Toutatis (Alinda family Pha)
Braille (Mars crosser)
Eros (Amor family)
Ganymed (Amor family)
Pallas (Pallas family)

I am at the beginning of the checks and for those, I put asteroid.cmod and asteroid.jpg.

Am I the only one to whom this happens? Is it a question of graphics card? Or are they bugs in the files?

:hi:

I personally checked all listed objects. All are displayed.
