Rome, Vatican, ice cream and so on...

Hello,

Even if it is not the main feature of Celestia, it is fine to have a close view of the place where we are living on 8) . And having a departure or arrival point on the Earth for a tour in the wide space lets us have a more precise idea of our situation in the big Universe.

For that purpose, Rome, one of the most ancient cities in the world is possibly a good choice.

The addon is a Virtual Texture showing Rome and surroundings in Italy in a very detailed way.

Interesting points are:

    * The texture is in a DDS DX3 format with an alpha channel so that water reflects the light.
    * The level of detail is very high and reaches 2.5 m/pixel for the City of Vatican.
    * A locations file is provided to show the names of cites around and features inside and outside Rome.
    * A celx script is installed in the script menu to toggle the display of the Vatican's border.
    * The readme file explains how to install and use this addon with other useful informations.
There is an Italian and a French version of this file. Please, read it!.
    * An uninstall batch file allows to remove cleanly the many files in different directories that the install process put.
I don't resist to show you some images.

Image
General view of the add-on. If you activate labels you can see some features. When you get closer, more labels are visible.

Image
I like the perspective views near the sea, they are often quite spectacular.
Here we fly over the airport of Fiumicino, near the mouth of the Tiber.

Image
Soccer (calcio) is very important in Italy. Here on the top left, the "Stadio Olimpico" and the big parks in the north of the city.

Image
Another view focuses on the Vatican.
Notice the reflections of light on the Tiber.

Image
The same view closer, and after activating the border.

This addon is available at
Motherlode Earth:Virtual Texture Close-Ups

Explore by yourself and enjoy!
Comments and questions are welcome and never hurt me.

NOTE: I committed this post before the addon was actually available  . Sorry for that. This explains some of the following discussions that have no more object now.

Best regards

This addon probably doesn’t even exist!
No link to download for more than 2 weeks and no way to find the addon.
I think this is a fake announcement with screenshots made from Google Earth.

You seem to be new here. Jogad is making no "fake announcements!". What might have happened is that the people from the Motherlode were taking some time off during that Christmas/NewYear holiday season.

This one didn't!

If I recall correctly, this add-on had some problems which made it impossible
to install on my PC. Jogad? Did you not receive any indication of incompatibilities
from Ulrich?

Now, I could be wrong here, as I'm trying to rely on my "Holiday Memory."

Thanks, Brain-Dead

Hello and happy new year,

@Fridger : Your trust if very appreciated. And it is very fair of you to stand for those who carry the Motherlode on their shoulders. Thank you very much. :D

@ Massimo: I am not sure about the Roman forum. I thought it was on the left side of the Tiber River at the place that you can see on the forth picture. But I am all but a specialist. My idea was to have some cities around the World as departures and arrivals for tours in Celestia from the Earth to the big Universe.
So, if you have ideas an suggestions for improvements, you are very welcome.

And now the core problem! I just come back to the forum (Celestia one’s) and I have just seen the message from Ulrich.
I have no problem launching the addon with my computer and my version of Celestia. I suspect the file is corrupted.
I send again the file (rome_addon.zip). I hope this time this is ok.
Installation should be easier than my previous addons and there are instructions in three languages. (Maybe only French is understandable :? ).

Next time (if any) I’ll avoid making announcements to early.

When I test it this time, I'll let you know whether the file is okay or not.
Sorry... Did not know that you didn't know about it the first time.

Take care, and thanks for the re-posting.

Never mind, Jogad. Mine was just a witty remark because the roman forum start from the bottom right of the fourth image and is "cutted off".

Okay Jogad, my friend...

Have tested the new upload completely, and it is as beautiful as you have previously
described. Will let Ulrich know that it is okay now.

Again, thanks for uploading once again. It worked beautifully this time.

Take care, Brain-Dead

Yes. In this good close-up is easy to recognize some urban features commons to european towns: the ancient centre surround by the medieval one, the medieval surrounded by modern (1500 - 1700) and finally the contemporanean (1800 and up).

I did add the add-on to the catalog just a few minutes ago.
So, if you want to see Fridger eating ice-cream in a more detail:
Just go ahead and download it from here.

Bob and Ulrich, thank you! :D
I have updated my first post to let a new reader get the download link more easily.

And I am sorry. There is no clue in the location file to find Fridger and his ice-cream.

I gelati sono buonissimi in Italia ! Quello che preferisco e quello
alla panna cotta. E quando sono stato a Roma, ho anche provato
un gelato al Roquefort.
