Hubble model in the official distribution

I'm working on an new astronomy course all based on Celestia, and I "rediscovered" today the official model associated to the Hubble space telescope (HST). GEEZ ! This model is absolutely HORRIBLE ! It has many defects, many pieces have their normals reverted, and it really doesn't have enough details ! This telescope is so important, there really should be another model for the official distribution !

Look at this 3D monster :

See the panels and their support, there are many reverted normals there. I may propose a new model for the official distribution (with a compromise on the details, so it isn't too big for the official distribution). Any opinion on this ?

I tink that would be a great idea, myself! I'm sure you could likely make one which would replace the original, and not really compromise either low-end system operations, or the size of the installation file itself.

Cham,

You're absolutely right that it's time for a new HST model. The only other one that I know if the extremely detailed version by Jestr. Since that model is 17MB compressed, it's just a bit too large for the base package. Do you know of an alternate model that we could use?

Chris,

I only know two models of the HST : the official version and Jestr's one. I'll try to do one myself.

I had noticed another crude one (Paolo Angeli) and 3 hight detailled ones, the bigger and nicer by Jestr, yes.

I already asked for that a year or so ago,
check this threat:

I think that there is something wrong with the orientation of this Terrier model, it seems to point its mirror towards the earth instead of space .

I'm working on a new medium detailed model, based on Jestr's model. I think it will be very nice, and the file size will be very reasonable (about 600KB). The pieces are all optimised, so animation will be very smooth in Celestia. Pictures to follow soon.

My HST model is finished at 99%. The 3ds file is only 484KB (I made several compromises about the details, to reduce the file size). For comparison, Mir and mercury7 models (mir.3ds and mercury7.3ds in the official distribution of Celestia) are 488KB and 744KB, respectively. Chris, is it okay for the official distribution ? I'll send you the 3ds file on demand.

Here are six pictures of the model :

Looks nice Cham!

Are the screen shots you posted without texures, or will they just not be used? I imagine one for the solar panels could improve things further.

No textures, as this may be part of the official distribution.

I've just added the NASA logo and rotated the panels. I think it's nicer this way :

Very nice work Cham. I'd be happy to replace the old HST with yours. May I suggest a bit of specular lighting on the solar panels? Also, I'd prefer to include a cmod rather than a 3ds, as the cmod will load faster.

Yes, there are some specular lighting on the panels (not visible on the pictures)

Yes it must be a light model, alas... Do you have a look on the nice pictures frank Gregorio proposed in the addons forum?http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/creators/fsgregs/spacecraft_photosThis could help for some details...Jeam

I haven't been around for a while and may have missed something here. How does one convert 3ds to cmod? Eh?

One downloads and runs the utility 3dstocmod.

CMOD Tools: 3dstocmod, cmodfix
(require Celestia v1.3.2 or later)

* Windows binaries: 3DS to CMOD, CMODfix
http://www.celestiaproject.net/~claurel/celestia/cmodtools/
* Documentation:
http://www.celestiaproject.net/~claurel/celest ... readme.txt
* Sourcecode:

So will this medium res/detail model be available for download? I would like to replace the model that I got when I downloaded the program. Thanks for the model Cham. I had noticed the reverse normals also and was planned to fix then but never got around to it. BTW are you going to texture the photo panels? You can also create a simple square or round ploy and image a rivet or bolthead and place that anywere you want to show fastening hadware. Keep the bolt image around 64k square. Let me know if you want me to create the map for you. It is a neat trick and adds a lot to the look of the craft.

Ok guys, here's my HST model (no textures). Can you tell me if it works correctly on your system. The file is a 496KB 3ds, and I'm experiencing some troubles when I try to convert it to a CMOD file, I can't tell why. Link to the 3ds version :
