displacement mapping - cool demo

Post #1by stonedyak » 13.09.2002, 22:49

http://drtypo.free.fr/index.html

I came across this program a couple of days ago (apologies if someone's already mentioned it). It takes heightmaps and texture maps of planets and lets you view it at any detail - from orbiting in space right down to flying through valleys!

I know this is a feature most people want in Celestia - well this is what can be done (and without next-gen gfx cards :D )

Unfortuanately it doesn't seem to be open source, and there is only a windows download. My guess is it's a research project... maybe source code will become available later on.

(p.s if you download it, use the function keys to vary speed - it took me a while to figure the controls out  )

Its nice though I hope this new version fixed the oceans lol....I suppose if you wanted to you can add in your own planets to explore...looks like that will take a bit of figuring out....Thanks for the link ;)
I'm trying to teach the cavemen how to play scrabble, its uphill work. The only word they know is Uhh and they dont know how to spell it!

Chris, take note: Add displacement mapping as soon as it's possible. If not 3.0.5, then 6 or 7.
