Hi Everyone,

I know this has almost nothing to do with celestia but I am just curious what screen resolution everyone uses. :)

1024 x 768...pointless to be higher unless you have a 30' + monitor/flat screen or plasma display

Ras, what are you talking about. The hole idea of using higher resolution is for more desktop realestate. 1024x768 in WinXP is just not enough room. With the bigger fatter taskbar and the thicker title bars you almost have to move to a higher resolution just regain the space lost by the new skins.
I know I could use classic mode but why use the same old look.
Besides Celestis looks better at higher resolution as well and at 1152x864 you can get away without using anti-aliasing if your card can't support it at the higher resolutions.
If your monitor can handle the higher resolutions and the refresh rate to go along with it you really should try moving up to the next resolution and see if after a while whether you think you could go back. I for one could never go back to 1024x768 unless my monitor died. Then I would have a fit and buy a new one. 1024x768 is just to small.
One thing I wish Celestia would do is 1280x1024. I can't use this resolution for some reason. It just isn't in the resolutions available. Hey Chris whats up with that anyway! I have a GeForce4 Ti4200 and I can't use 1280x1024 in Celestia. That is a very common resolution! All OpenGL games can handle that resolution so why can't Celestia?

Im talking about desktop...I render games at 1280 x 1024 at minimun...Any higher for the desktop is well pointless as it eats up resources and well I have no problems with that res...just me opinion is all...also considering im using win 98 se still...and a 17" monitor...

Hey Ras,
I am using a 17" monitor. I had to quit using my 19" because the left side of the screen kept shrinking and expanding. I had to hit the thing like an old TV to make it stop. I was driving everyone in the house crazy because all would be quiet and then I would have to give it a whack. My next PC purchase is a new monitor. Hopefully a nice flat screen CRT 19" or 20" and in black to match the rest of my PC. I would love to try a TFT but there to expensive and I am not to thrilled with the way the display video or animation. They look smeared to me. Well eccept the Apple 22" wide screen but that thing is a dream screen. TO EXPENSIVE!

Desktop and Games at 1024x768x32

However I can't get Celestia to actually display the option of running at this resolution and Colour Depth. I have to use 1024x768x16. I can't figure it out, every other resolution can be picked at 32bit though.

Rass,

Nope, I'm using 98SE. This little Quirk is really confusing me, it's not a major probelm though. It's more of a annoyance, in the nicest possible way, taking nothing away from the excellence that is Celestia.

Rasilon,

Why do you often say that problems "must be due to XP'?
I'm just wondering.

I'm running XP Pro and have no problem using Celestia full screen with 1600x1200x32 @60Hz. It looks relly good at that resolution, and there doesn't seem to be a significant reduction in frame rate, either.

(On the other hand, 10 f/s with stars isn't all that fast. I suspect it'll be another couple of generations of 3D graphics cards before they can get the hidden-object rate up to 60 f/s where it should be.)

Like WinMe, XP does try to use Plug-n-Play information to decide what resolutions are actually supported by a particular CRT. (Running one at too high a resolution and scanrate, beyond what it can sync to, can overheat components and has been known to cause fires.) Could this limiting feature be part of the problem some are seeing, perhaps?

Could be that it isn't 4:3 ratio. 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 etc. are 4:3.

1280x960 is the nearest 4:3 resolution.

Just guessin' :)
