Benchmarking Forum or Thread

Now I know I haven't got the best graphics, so I always thought the 5-15fps I usually get was to be expected, but now I wonder. Here's people getting 3000fps. I didn't think my machine was THAT bad.
Could there be something wrong with it? BTW: I went into the Open-GL settings on the graphics driver the other day and set it for quality rather than speed, and the FPS dropped to 0.6fps!!!!!!
I'm really worried about my machine now. I would be only too pleased to use my CPU @ 100% if I could get the 200-3000fps figures quoted here.
Perhaps a Benchmarks Forum might be an idea, so that people could post their performance stats, so that others can compare. That way I would know if my stats were about right for my specification or if there's something wrong with my machine.
This would allow people to optimize their machine for running Celestia from others examples, or recognize when something is wrong. It would allow the developers to see what impact new releases / features are having on performance of the pool of machines out there. (I know that Chris is concerned about performance impact of new releases on older machines.)
This would have be done in a way so that as much as possible apples can be compared with apples. ie. A few commonly used models with reasonable polygon counts (eg. Space Station V) could be used with a Cel-URL to dictate a common viewpoint.
We'd have to come up with a list of the most important machine spec items common to most people out there. Probably aimed at the lower spec users out there, as those with more powerfully featured nVidia cards, etc are not going to be too concerned with perfomance anyway. There would have to be some instructions for people on how to look up the information on their machine.
People would have to include a certain amount of machine details with their perfomance reports...
I'll start the list off, but I don't know everything that affects Celestia performance, so please add to this, hopefully we can come up with a core set of items which are most critical to Celestia.
CPU (Make and speed)
RAM
Graphics Card (Make, speed, RAM)
OpenGL settings
... Convert 32bit textures to 16bit?
... Wait for vertical sync
... etc
Screen resolution
Refresh rate
Color depth
etc...

Johaen wrote:...When I do that, I get 200-300 fps, using 100% of my CPU. My display's refresh rate is 60 Hz. Obviously, Celestia is rendering more frames than my refresh rate. I also did this test on my friend's PC (which is much more powerful than mine in every regard), with the same display. He got approx. 3000 fps, CPU running at 100%.
