With the help of the guys at the forum at Dell.com, i managed to update my graphics driver (nvidia geforce FX go5200) with newer stuff, but for some reason, it's caused celestia (and other high-demand programs) to slow down tremendously. What used to be good 20 fps around earth, is now 6fps!

Can anyone help?

Sounds to me like the driver install didn't work right or mixed the driver parts. If it doesnt work roll back to the old drivers, it could also be that Dell removed some of the more advanced OpenGL drivers to make the package smaller. Microsoft does the same thing when they get the drivers from nViida, they strip most of the OpenGL out in favour of there Direct X drivers. At thsi point the only option is to complian to Dell that OpenGL is broken in the driver release or go to nVidia and check to see if they have drivers for your video chip on there site, Most GO chips are supported only by the selling vendors, meaning it is Dells responsibility to deliver the driver and feature set they wish.
The alternative is to use System Restore and restore your system tot he state it was in before the drivers were installed. But be warned this my not work all that well. This is one of the issues that comes with having a notebook computer. Yuo have top learn to settle for older drivers. Hope this helps some. If i were you i would make Dell walk you through the repair process.

did the guys from dell have you install the driver from the nvidia web site
OR FROM THE MICROS$$T'S SITE
if from ms then do a FULL uninstall of the driver ,and reinstall from nvida

Please don't forget that integrated graphics chipsets require drivers provided by the manufacturer of the computer system. Nvidia does not provide them.

Thats why i said he is going to have to go back to Dell and either reinstall there older driver for the chip or live with what he has.

It would seem uninstalling doesnt really get rid of old drivers, remnants seem to corrupt a new installation. Have you tried the file remover such as here;

You should be able to use nvidia drivers if dell did not manufacture the card....

GeForce go 7800 is all I see at nvidias site...
