I downloaded fridger's new test celestia thingy, and stupid me forgot to back up the original celestia.exe, so i had to reinstall.

So, I launched celestia.

It never appeared. I did ctrl+alt+delete, and saw celestia.exe in the processes thingy, but celestia just wont run.

I know i'm missing something, and I hope I don't end up breaking my computer out of seething pure rage that would send even osama bin laden hiding.

I am sorry to hear this, but I can assure you that on my XP notebook there is not the slightest problem in connection with the new version. I usually run the Celestia.exe directly in the build directory without even installing anything. For a long time I had a regular Celestia installed (including registry entry etc.) and could start the freshly compiled version directly in the build directory. There was never any interference with the version that was properly installed.

How about a complete COLD reboot?

PS: You know that "by design" a second Celestia does not start if another version is still running (even if it crashed). Did you make shure in the application manager that there is no other running Celestia lurking around somewhere in the background??

I have 2 celestia's on my computer, Celestia and BackupCelestia (separate folders). BackupCelestia is for when i screw something up and can just copy/paste into the Celestia folder.

Interestingly, when i reinstalled backup celestia, it ran just fine. So, I KNOW I'm missing something in the regular celestia... :hmm:

Don't know if my problem is related or not, but I have noticed that my
Firefox.exe browser program IS running in windows when galaxy-rendering
is enabled, but that it's running in the same manner as PlutonianEmpire's
Celestia.exe (In other words it boots into the process list, but does not
break out into the real world from there.)

If I try to run it again, it simply starts another copy in the process list, but
doesn't display any information on my display.

Just more information for you...

Again, this could very well simply be due to of a lack of memory though.
Also re-boot DOES repair the problem on my machine. Cold or Warm.

And, (If I didn't say it loud enough the first time)

Did you also exchange back the deepsky.dsc file? I don't think this was the problem, but just to be sure...

A cold reboot means running down the computer such that it comes to a complete halt. Then restart it after some seconds of waiting.

Unlike (some) other OSes, in Windows there is the registry where regularly installed programs are entered and administrated (to some extent). In particular if the registry entries are broken the whole system may well cease to work.

Selden (I think) has explained several times the best methods to run several copies of Celestia in parallel. So I am sure he will speak up in this thread very soon. Anyhow I don't think these problems are directly related to the new version. I have started our new Celestia many times after recompiling it without encountering any problems.

Anyhow, tonight, I shall critically examine Bob's issue in case of my notebook. We'll see. Also if there is really a problem, more people will surely come forward with reports...

"cold reboot" = shutdown, turn off power, turn on power, boot. This clears memory and other hardware states and BIOS runs the complete POST sequence. Shutdown may be by selecting Shutdown from the O/S or by forcibly turning off the power.

"warm reboot" = select Operating System's reboot option. This does not clear memory and BIOS does not run all POSTs. Memory tests are not run, for example.

"forced reboot" = press reset button on system box. This is comparable but not identical to forcibly turning off the power. The operating system is interrupted in the middle of whatever it's doing. File system directories may get damaged. This clears most but not quite all hardware states. BIOS does run all POSTs. Disk check routines are likely to be invoked when O/S starts.

Celestia running but not opening a window usually means that one of its catalog files is damaged.

I'd suggest downloading FT1 again.
Delete the folder and all contents of the failing version of Celestia.
Copy your working Celestia folder.
(Right-Select the working Celestia folder, Drag, select Copy in the popup menu. It'll create "Copy of Celestia" folder.)

Select all of the FT1 Zip file's contents and drag them into the "Copy of Celestia" main directory. The Data and Models folders should be updated. You should get a popup saying that files will be overwritten. Select "Yes to all"

Run the new Celestia.exe by clicking on it. The desktop icon will still run your old, working Celestia, not FT1. URLs will go to the running Celestia (whichever it is). If no copy of Celestia is running, they'll start your old, working Celestia, not FT1.

it just occurs to me: did you set your Firefox browser as the /default browser/?? You may check and set it in Firefox: preferences->general.
Otherwise it will not work as far as I remember.

Hmmm come to think of it once Celestia did the same thing, it was running under Processes but not displaying. However I soon fixed it but I do not remember how. I think I was just tinkering around with some files and when Celestia would not open I moved those files back.

Yes sir... Firefox is my default browser. Again, not to worry though.

Remember I'm using a sub-par pc still, and your test version of Celestia
still performs spectacularly on my Brain-Dead machine.

I found out why it wasn't working: I took my fictional galaxy and put it into the extras directory, and for some reason, it caused celestia to run but not appear, so i put it back into the deepsky.dsc and it works fine now.

That usually means that there's a typographical error in the DSC file that you created. Or in the one that you deleted the object from. Or both.

Now I remember! What happened to me happened after I typed something in one of the files and when Celestia wouldn't load I changed what I typed back to the way it was. Thanks selden for helping me remember that.
