Tempel 1 "wild2like" oportunity?

Of course,we still don??t have crisp and detailed images of the comet??s nucleus, but I wonder if we will know about this comet than Wild2.If so,maybe will be possible to have an ever more detailed texture of a comet in Celestia.Or am I wrong and Deep Impact are only doing measurements of the comet and are not going to snap close-up photos of the comet,in high resolution?

Why don't you start working on that "potato shaped" mesh meanwhile ;-) . For texture people potatos are nnot exactly ideal shapes ;-)

How many times I have to tell?I know nothing about advanced texture editing and even less about making 3d models and transforming pictures in maps. And I don??t have time to learn or even have the basic knowledge.
It was only a suggestion, because Wild2 was a more or less fast developed texture and model, since the probe imaged it.So I was only comparing this situation with that comet.I was not interested in offending you and I am totally dependent of Celestia developers.I wasn??t,either, urging someone to do such a thing. It??s only something to think.
But I guess Celestia is in a relatively low down.No one have posted about Tempel 1 or the new photos of the minor moons of Saturn, except me.I don??t know what is happening, but I??m worried...

If I heard and remember correctly, a shape model of the nucleus will be made in a week or so. Don't know if it will become publicly available.

Daniel,

I know that you are NOT a graphics guru, but please also note that people like me tend to be completely up-to-date with events like Tempel 1. I am surely not the only one here who regularly reads Newspapers, checks NASA sites and watches TV news ;-) . This event was really hard to miss, so I guess most people were informed. So many surely felt: why posting these things once more?

You always tend to give us some "homework" to do, forgetting that for sure some texture expert (including myself) would start right away with respective work, if it was THAT easy! You may assume that we would barely overlook interesting possibilities for Celestia, if it is at all feasible. Also without your constant reminders ;-)

That's why I was referring you to the potato shape of Tempel 1! Such a shape makes the texture mapping a real art! The same is true for Phoebe, where you also never get tired "suggesting" that perhaps someone might get around ....

And by the way, how can it be that YOU never have time for learning something new, but you always presume that people like myself, for example have plenty of spare time for doing that tedious texture work that you are dreaming about. I think I even wrote you once what my professional responsabilities are ;-)

Bye Fridger

Of course I know that putting textures in potatoes meshes are not easy. But I was wondering what??s the difference between now and the Stardust flyby of Wild 2 in 2004.A few months after the rendezvous,we have a texture package with a texture,a model,a xyz file and a ssc file.Do you remember?I don??t know how good it was.But I would like to know what??s different now.Maybe fewer developers?
Maybe Phill Stooke is working in this meshes...he is the specialist,I think...

Huygens landing on Titan was hard to miss too and that had a huge thread in the Physics and Astronomy forum.

I also think it's a bit strange that the Celestia community doesn't seem eager to discuss what Deep Impact has discovered. Maybe there will be more to talk about when information from the mission is studied more.

Michael :)

If I'm not mistaken, we're still waiting for a shape model/texture for Phoebe, even though the Cassini flyby was a year ago...

One problem is that Celestia doesn't provide any easy way to model Addon objects like comets. Volumetric fog and animated models and textures are still on the to-do list.

Think of it as an asteroid with a thick atmosphere?
