Hello,

Is there a limit for the size of a model?

I assume by "size" you mean "the number of polygons", not "dimensions."

I don't think Celestia intentionally puts any limits on model size, although I wouldn't be a bit surprised if there are bugs in the code which cause some limitation. My high-redshift galaxy models have close to 300,000 points, and my "Mars Passenger ship" is about the same. I don't know how many are in the "Prodigous Space Station", but I'm sure it's a lot more.

Unfortunately, my understanding is that some 3D design programs choke when models become too large. On SciFi-Meshes.com, people have complained about Maya crashing when they exceed ~1.2 million polys.

Anim8or generates an error message and refuses to output an individual mesh in 3DS format that has more than 64K points in it. I don't know if that's an Anim8or restriction or a limitation in the definition of the format. Of course, a model usually consists of many meshes.

I came across this problem just last week. It seems to be a 3ds format limitation, 3dsMax 4.2 will not output more than 64k points in one mesh.

No,this is a 3ds format limit, just split the object into smaller pieces-a bit inconvenient if the mesh in question is say an asteroid (you can see the seams)but with other models its not so bad,Jestr

You can hide the seams pretty well with some creative UV texture mapping... In Cheetah3D, the software even helps with it.
