10000+ galaxies, Status report

Hi all,

in this thread, I shall report on the status of my work on
10000+ galaxies from Steinicke's NGC/IC precision
catalog. For the time being the displays are based on Toti's
galaxy patch with an increasing number of modifications
by myself.

-- I now have derived the general and exact
transformations that automatically produce the correct
orientations of all 10000+ galaxies from a few catalog
parameters (d/D and position angle)!

-- for elliptical galaxies, I assumed a spheroidal
shape
(rather than the circular pancake shape in case
of spirals) with dimensions according to the elliptical
subclass number int(10*(1-d/D)). This procedure emerged
in discussions with Selden.

-- I am desperately waiting for Toti's programme code with
which he generated the various galaxy templates, since a
number of them have flaws: like incorrect orientation of the
bars for SBx galaxies or a mirrored sense of rotation of
the spiral arms.

-- the appearance of elliptical galaxies can be dramatically
improved (so don't worry)

-- the next 3 comparisons with actual DSS survey
photos illustrate the high precision in orientation and
shape
that my transformations have reached already!

I shall only report back in the forum once Chris
has managed to restore a decent forum performance,
since otherwise this costs too much time for me.
Sorry.

Fantastic... :D

I presume the 2 smaller of second pics are not part of those 10000+ as their orientation seems different...

What is the next work on this? colors?

Excellent work Fridger,

The orientation of the galaxies in Celestia seem to match the galaxies in the real pictures very well.....except for

...yes they do seem to stand out.

I hope if the coding of the wrong orientation to the spiral arms, and to the centre bar of SBx galaxies is solved while the forum is still acting up, then we may possibly hear from you then !?.

cheers,

All pictures are from the 10000+ sample. In the second picture (from the top), there is precisely two (small) galaxies the orientation of which is incorrect due to a flaw in Toti's galaxy templates. Everything else looks /pretty/ similar to the photos, except that the rotation sense of one spiral in the second photo is mirrored again because of a flaw in the galaxy template.

I first want to improve (rewrite) the code on elliptical galaxies and add other code improvements. Then comes color!

Fridger, this is awesome ! 8O

I feel like a child in front of a chrismass tree, with many nice boxes under it. :)

Same here, and the 1.4.0 celestia release it the biggest present sitting behind the tree just waiting to be opened. :D

This is depresing. Not the pictures or the add-on. Just the fact I had to wait ten minutes to see this thread.
Fridger this is something I am going to be keeping an eye on. Things are looking great. Please keep up the work on this as I feel it is probably one of the best futures add-ons for Celestia.

Yihaaa!!!

Really excellent work Fridger! I am really looking forward to the time when this amazing improvement will be finished.

It's already looking marvelous, so what will it be looking like when you are done with all the improvements? Probably mindblowing ;)

Regards,

Guckytos
