Ok, hopefully, for all of our sakes, this idea that myself & probably many of you out there have been toying with, I do really hope this is the beginning of it, because I wanna get started asap, because if WE can pull this off..
Ok. Now please dont think that im trying to hijack Celestia, or the idea, or this forum, but I dont think of anywhere else I could really post it?
The concept, basically, is to create a new type of program, somwhere along the lines of Celestia, but more upto scratch with modern computer gaming, graphical, & rendering technologies, plus a wee bit more ofcourse..
Basically its this, its a Celestia type program, integrated with an Orbiter/Space Simulator type program, with also a real time in program editor, which would allow you, for example, to drag & drop a planet, moon, asteroid, or even a star, & observe the effects.. Perhaps you wish to cause the biggest & most spectacular meteorite shower in history? Or maybe you would like to see what happens when you drop a few big stars near each other? Or even fling planets into the path of each other & observe it break up accordingly with how much force you told the objects to be travelling at, ect, ect.. Yeah, physics... Done properly ( not the piss poor effort in HL2 (which they actually directly copied from another game)), would give the program even more appeal, I mean, thats like a game in itself.. You could literally see the (almost) infinate combinations of placing this here & that there, & oh what if that was there?
Ok yeah.. Thats just some of what its going to be..
Pressing just a button, or with just a mouse click or two you can switch to whatever space vehicles will be in the program, & have all sorts of fun, skipping across a planets atmosphere, dodging thru an asteroid field on your way to a previously unvisited, exotic star system..
The base package would all be PRETTY much all of realistic content, barring a few space/starships that donot/maynot exist
Freeware.. Could it be done? I wasnt EXACTLY planning on it.. But a definate must be of this would be a very cheap product.. Not in quality ofcourse.. But I believe that if you make a game cheap enough to begin with, then people will be more inclinded to purchase it, no inflation bullshit, just enough money to cover all the necessary expenses, some left over for the people who put in the hard yakka, I just find it rediculous how some of these people get so greedy.. Im not greedy, im not thinking about the money, im thinking about building a program better that I would want to use.
Dont get me wrong, Celestia kicks arse, always will, but times are moving on.. & only so much optimization can be done before a full revamp is in order.
Would be mad if this could get the Celestia team aboard, would never dream of trying to compete against people who have brought somthing marvellous & quiet useful into this world, I would much rather be along side them, helping to create the next, best space program.
Seriously guys.. Somthing done along the lines I have describes will absolutely be beneficial for the Astronomical community.. I think somthing like that would make an even more formidable educational tool then Celestia currently is, & also help to spark an active interest in Astronomy in many people..
I mean, CMON, who doesnt wanna make a planet or two go boom?

Sounds just a bit too simple, doesn't it?
Take the cream off the Celestia and Orbiter "cakes", stir a little and sell the stuff without doing a good coding job from the scratch.
You obviously don't seem to be too educated on or interested in the astrophysics/physics side of such a complex task....
Good Luck

Next time, try not to let your ego get in the way of somone elses idea, I dunno if its because you CANNOT or did not think of it, but its somthing, & I find your entire remark offensive.
Enough said.
Its ONLY Astrophysics, but because you,me & that dude over there are only human, we somtimes get abit blown away with the scale of things.. I mean, even Celestia should open your eyes abit more mate.
Ofcourse, our knowledge of space & astrophysics is limited, but what we CAN do is use what we know & integrate that.
Sure, I havnt supplied 1 iota of information of HOW any of this could be acheived, im not a programmer, not really much of an artist, or anything else really that you need to be to contribute to a piece of software. Sure free public software developement has always interested me, but im more the one to come up with objectives & ideas about things.. I mean, dont get me wrong, im not a moron, If I gotta do this whole thing alone, I can, & will, but its gonna get done. Sure maybe I aint gonna be the one to finish it, but im sure going to do everything in my power to get such a project off the ground
& its computer modeling for goodness sake! ITS ONLY COMPUTER MODELING, & IN COMPUTER MODELING, ANYTHING CAN BE DONE, just thre is an easy way, & a hard way, the hard way being, well, harder, but ultimately acheiving the best result.
Ok yes, the truth will be, in the finished product, many things will have to be excluded..But its gotta come down to this first.. Should we Build up from Celestia, or do we start from scratch, perhaps basing much of the architecture off Celestia?
Ideas people, use your bloody brain to think other then attack people because you dont agree with them...
Those who have posted kind(er) replies, thankyou, yes my idea is rather farfetched, but so is the device your sitting infront of right now in order to read this.
Sorry but to my German soul your whole paragraph sounds rather confuse. I also can't spot much of an "idea" except that you plan to sell the result.
My ego didn't even wake up yet . It's just all too confuse for me. Perhaps Selden can help me in his well understandable English what I should take home from your "plea" ...
Take this quite "eloquent" paragraph for example:
Sure free public software developement has always interested me, but im more the one to come up with objectives & ideas about things.. I mean, dont get me wrong, im not a moron, If I gotta do this whole thing alone, I can, & will, but its gonna get done. Could someone summarize in ONE SENTENCE, please, what is the substance therein??
