Hi all,

since ElChristou reminded me:
ElChristou wrote:Hello Fridger,

What happens to your bump-map?? have you uploaded it??

OK, let me stand by my promise of providing a bump-map
texture for my recent 4k Titan...but be warned:

This is NOT my usual scientific standard! ;-)

Nevertheless, it was great fun to do last week! Of course,
this work was heavily inspired by a bottle of great German
beer
...So maybe you enjoy the result as I actually do.

Before showing you some little "exhibition" of what a 'harmless'
bumpmap can do to the mysterious world of Titan, here are
the required files for download:

http://www.shatters.net/~t00fri/titan4k-bumpy.zip

Just substitute the new 'titan.ssc' in the extras/titan folder and
copy the 'titan-bump.png' into titan/textures/medres.

That's all...

If there is more interest, I have made quite a number of
(partly much less 'provocative') further bumpmaps. In case
people like to play a bit more...

Anyway, I think the following screenshots convey significantly
more of a strangely inspiring atmosphere than some of the
recent ficticious worlds I could "admire" in the 'Add-ons'
department. Nature tends to be much more "inventive" than
just 'repainting' e.g. Saturn in strange colors...

So, here comes...

The mysterious, bumpy world of Titan

The Huygens landing site is to the left (but just invisible).

Look at the 'river-bed' that extends over close to 1000 km in this shot close to the South pole!!

...and just in case you prefer the first picture above with a hazy methane cloud environment, here it comes...

Nice one Fridger,

If, like me, anyone wants to see this bumpy version of Titan as an Alternate Surface, whilst still using Fridger's new surface texture as standard, then here is the .ssc;

Code: Select all

Modify "Titan" "Sol/Saturn"
{
   Texture "titan.png"
   #BumpMap "titan-bump.png"
   #BumpHeight 12.0
        SpecularColor [ 0.15 0.15 0.15 ]
   SpecularPower 25.0
}

AltSurface "Titan-Bump" "Sol/Saturn/Titan"
{
   Texture "titan.png"
   BumpMap "titan-bump.png"
   BumpHeight 12.0
        SpecularColor [ 0.15 0.15 0.15 ]
   SpecularPower 25.0
}

Remove the old "titan.ssc" from the titan folder, and replace with this new .ssc calling it "titan.ssc"

Place the "titan-bump.png" flie inside the medres folder (this already contains the "titan.png" file), which is inside the titan/textures folder.

This should now be set up, so that when you run Celestia, and you right click on Titan to bring up Alternate Surfaces, "Titan-Bump" should be available for selection.

cheers,
TERRIER

Less provocative?Do you mean more realistic?
I would like to see this other bumpmaps.With this bump,Titan looks like a cheese.
But I think that the bumpmap is at least a little imaginary.
Is it possible,in the future,to have real bump data about Titan?How a bumpmap data is get,usually?

Daniel,

Realistic bumpmaps usually are generated from digital elevation models provided by the USGS. They usually generate their models from height data provided by space missions. Unfortunately, these models are not yet available for Titan.

Approximate elevation models and bumpmaps can be generated from the shadows cast by surface features if you know the lighting angles.

Sorry, but I couldn't help thinking what some slices of Titan would look like on some nice crusty bread.

mind your teeth ;-)

That stuff is pretty cold (-180 degrees centigrade).

Bye Fridger

PS:

OK, tonight I'll upload a less /artistic/ bumpmap, for the more serious of the forum users, like Danielj ;-)

Hey,
I downloaded and installed the Titan bump and I don't see anything ?

Do I need to drink a bottle (or more) of great German beer to see it ?
I tried some bottle of French red wine but now I see two pink moons.
What is the good one ? 8O

No, I joke, of course :D
All is ok. It's a very funny exercise :wink: .

Thanks for your Titan texture Fridger.

Jdou, ;-)

after my /cultural/ "German beer" remark I was quite sure to get a "French redwine" response soon or later ;-)

Good to hear that Titan now has redoubled in French machines and its appearance changed towards the "color of love"...

Bye Fridger
